Hi, my name is Magdalena I'm 25 and suffer from lower back pains mainly, but also upper back and pelvis.

I'm 5'9 tall about 10 stone maybe a bit less (62kg). I'm looking for a double size bed with a mattress that will support my back. I have looked up every mattress type and I'm still confused on which one to buy?

Please help me with the decision? I don't want to go over £1000 ideally cheaper. Thank you
Kind regards,
Magdalena

Hi Magdalena,

Thank you for your enquiry, we're sorry to hear of your struggles with a bad back. It's really frustrating when you can't sleep due to a poor mattress!

The main considerations when advising on the right mattress for someone are body weight(s), preferred feel and budget. In addition, any information regarding medical conditions also need to to be taken into account. So thanks for giving us such detail it really helps us advise on the best beds.

There are no mattresses out there that will completely cure a bad back, but there are solutions, which may relieve the pain. Ideally, you need a mattress suited to your body weight in terms of tension, as this in itself can resolve issues with backs, as these are invariably caused by not having the right spring tension/feel in a mattress. What is required from a mattress is support from the spring unit with comfort being provided by the upholstery layers.

Most people incorrectly choose too firm a spring tension for their bodyweight and ignore the upholstery layers. However, the upholstery layers provide the comfort feel in a mattress. For a bad back you need enough comfort to allow you to sink ever so slightly into your mattress.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

In your particular case, we would suggest a medium tension/feel mattress as you are borderline between soft and medium. If the medium feels too firm, you could soften it with the application of a topper, but if you were to opt for a soft, it is more difficult to make a mattress feel firmer.

Given your budget, we would suggest looking at the Origins range and in particular the Origins Pocket 1500 as this will provide an overall medium feel and will still leave money in the budget to go for a topper if you felt you needed one. £575.00 for a double mattress.

Origins Pocket spring 1500 mattress

Your bodyweight This will feel
Under 10 Stone / 63kg Medium
10-12 Stone / 63-76kg Medium
12-14 Stone / 76-88kg Medium
14-16 Stone / 88-101kg Medium
16-18 Stone / 101-114kg Soft to Medium
18 Stone / 114kg Plus Please call for advice

We always recommend using a new mattress for at least 2 weeks before deciding upon whether a topper is necessary, as buying at the same time as the mattress may turn out to be an unnecessary expense.

We trust that the above is of assistance to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

kind regards.
