Brooke + Wild Ultima Mattress Reviewed
Hello !
Lovely to discover your website. My husband and I have just received our new Ultima Soft mattress, and this is the end of our second week with it. We also have the Verity bedframe. We chose a soft feel ...for my benefit really, and I'm glad we did because It certainly feels more like medium/firm !! ..and is not very lux in feel.
Quite disappointed not to really enjoy our purchase. There's nothing actually wrong as such, but I do find it surprisingly firm . The good news is that it doesn't feel too hot and there's no roll together.
I'm a notoriously bad sleeper, very light and minimal (sadly )and my husband can sleep on a clothesline. I am a rather bony 8 stone 8, and my husband is around 16 stone I guess.
I do get very hot nowadays being mid fifties.
Would love to have a feeling of sinking into luxury, if that were possible !! Thinking of returning this mattress but not sure how to proceed and what you might suggest for us, please? I see that you also have a guarantee. It's a tricky one..we don't like waste but on the other hand it's important to get this right ...I was even wondering if I should just try a mattress topper on this Ultima instead of returning ? (wondering about the Brinkhaus Outlast ?)...
We got a good discount on the mattress, and I am about to confirm the actual refund we would receive from Brooke and Wilde ..I'm guessing we actually paid in the region of £1200 but this I can find out next week. I'd be very grateful for your advice please. Many thanks !
All good wishes
Hi Anon,
Many thanks for your question about the Brooke & Wild Ultima mattress. Also thanks for the kind words about our website on mattresses.
We detail absolutely everything we do when making our own custom mattress range and try to uncover what's inside other manufacturers models so customers can compare more accurately. Though sometimes this is tricky with retailers wanting to keep hidden what's inside their beds! More on that later.
In terms of guarantee if a mattress is unsuitable you should most certainly take up any guarantee to return it. That's why we have a 60 day love it or return it guarantee. To make sure that the advice we give is as close to perfect for you as possible, however, if it isn't there's no risk to you.
Why is the Brook + Wild mattress so hot?
Sorry to hear you're not getting on with it because it is so hot. The reason you're overheating is because the Ultima mattress is a 100% synthetic memory foam based mattress.
Memory foam is the most heat retentive of all mattress materials. So if you're a hot sleeper, like you've said you should really avoid it. This is because all memory foam is vasco elastic and requires heat to mould. You can read more on why we never use memory foam here and what to avoid with it.
What's inside the Brook + Wild Ultimate mattress?
We've had a long look at the specifications of this mattress and sadly Brook + WIld are one of those retailers that won't disclose exact specifics of what's inside their mattress. They tell you how many layers of this and that but don't give you the GSM (Grams per square meter) or depths/densities of foams. Making it sadly impossible to compare or work out value for money. Image from Brookandwild.com's website showing layers but no details
The same goes for the spring unit they use. You need to know the spring gauge, not just the amount to know if that spring tensions suitable for your bodyweight. A soft spring is usually for sub 8 stone sleepers and a firm spring for 16 stone plus for example. Also, they use micro or HD springs which we never do, this is because they provide practically zero support in a mattress. We explain in detail more about the sudden use of thousands of unnecessary mattress springs here.
For you and your husband you really need a split tension mattress so both have the right spring tension for your differing body weights. Then its upto the upholstery on top which will get you that luxury super soft sink. Remember when comparing mattresses you need to know two things:
- Pocket spring gauge, amount and material
- GSM (Grams per square meter) of all upholstery that is then used as the mattress comfort layers.
Lastly the Brook + Wild model is only one sided, like all memory foam mattresses. This means you can never turn the mattress to even out settlement. One sided mattresses have afar shorter shelf life than a two sided model. So bear this in mind especially given how much you're spending.

- Blended Wool and Cotton features as the top Comfort Layer. This 50% Cotton and 50% Wool mix of a substantial overall weight allows for a deep sink sensation.
- This is then followed by generous laters of Horsehair and Horsetail.
- This Horsehair layer has shorter and finer fibres acting like millions of tiny springs. The loft of this layer is important as a sub-primary comfort layer. It will take a considerable number of years for this product to lose its recovery properties.
- This additional layer of wool acts as a cushion between the two horsehair layers so the compression on the preceding layer of horsetail is separate to the compression on the forthcoming layer of horsehair.
- The support comes from 1476 Calico encased Pocket Springs in a tension of your choice.
- 8 padded turning handles on a kingsize.
- Two rows genuine Hand Side Stitching & Hand Tufted.
- The Woven mattress cover is completely Chemical-Free using a Natural plant-based fire retardancy protection.
