A customer asked

Hi, My wife and I had a memory foam mattress for 5 years and suited her but I was getting lower back pain every morning getting up. I weigh 18st and my wife 12st. I tried many other mattresses and the sales people all giving me different opinions and ended up with the Cotswold posture pocket pillowtop 1000 King-Size in medium. Since, we have had this for just over 2 months both of us have had nothing but upper and lower back pain right through the night. People say it takes time to adjust to a new mattress but I think this is suicide.....what can you suggest please?

Thanks Rod >

Hi Rod,

Thanks for your question.

Please note that with your body weights and the 6 stone differential we ourselves would have matched you with a dual tension mattress; One half Firm for you and the other half Medium for your wife;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The problems you are both suffering at present could be because your current mattress is too soft for you and too firm for you wife.

For comfort on the firm side, you could supplement this with a topper to provide a softer comfort layer whilst still retaining the support for your weight.

We always advise to steer clear of pillowtop mattresses, mainly for the reason that the fabric compresses very quickly and once it does you can do nothing to salvage the mattress. We would always advise it is a far better option to choose a completely separate and detachable topper as you can then further increase the lifespan of the bed.

Please note that any mattress will feel firmer until it is slept on for a substantial period as the fillings and spring system will need to compress down.

If you simply can't do this any longer then the only thing I could suggest at present is for you to contact the retailer and discuss the option of returning the mattress and opting for a split tension pocket sprung mattress, pivotal to your argument for the exchange could be the original advice provided by the retailer.

I trust that this helps but if you require any further assistance please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
