Change of mattress required
Hi John, Ryan and colleagues!
I just bought my first flat and will be moving soon. To save money, I'm going to use the bed the previous owner has left behind (a slatted double), but want to invest in a good quality mattress, which I hope you can advise me on.
I started my search at John Lewis in Edinburgh and only have praise for the excellent sales staff there, The mattress they steered me towards certainly seemed extremely comfortable and suitable, but I have some concerns over the longevity of a one-sided mattress and have read some reviews of John Lewis Natural Collection mattresses that suggest some buyers are unhappy with the way the mattresses wear over time.
I previously owned a medium feel Habitat pocket sprung mattress (double sided, of course) that's now 15 years old and which now resides in my mother's spare room (I love sleeping on it every time I visit, especially as my current rented flat has an old style spring mattress). I would be happy to have that mattress again and I'm sure it doesn't have any of the mini techno springs or luxury natural fillings that the John Lewis mattress does. Of course, if I can get something even better I won't complain.
I wonder if I might be better spending my money on something that perhaps a little less advanced and luxurious looking on paper, but is double sided. I am a little reluctant to purchase a mattress without being able to visit the shop, but you seem to have a good reputation and I am interested to hear your thoughts.
I am in good health, male, about 6ft tall and weight about 90kg (I'm working on that last figure though!). Everything I've experienced so far suggests a medium level of firmness would be suitable. I was hoping to spend around £400 or so on a double mattress, but don't mind spending a bit more on something high quality and long lasting if the extra cost is justified. I have ruled out memory foam due to potential overheating issues and reckon pocket sprung is the way to go.
What mattress(es) would you recommend and why?
Thank you!
David.
