A customer asked

I'm looking for a good quality super king mattress and was looking at the Hypnos Sublime mattress and the Harrison Lingrush 5000. What's your thoughts of these two brands and these two beds. Price wise they seem similar but the the Harrison seems to have way more springs. How do these then compare to what you offer?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Tim.

Good question. How do these compare with what we offer?

If we take the Hypnos Sublime first (I assume this is the Pillowtop Sublime and not the House of Fraser Sublime) the description is as follows:

Hypnos Sublime Official Description

The pillow top provides a sumptuously soft and comfortable cushion of wool above the supportive mattress.

This no turn mattress features two layers of ReActive 6 pocket springs with over 2,000 individual springs.

Upholstered with layers of wool, silk, Talalay latex and non-allergenic white fibre, covered with the finest Belgian Damask to provide an exquisite, soft and silky sleep surface.

Tailored with 3 rows of genuine hand side-stitching for additional edge-to edge support, and hand-tufted for longevity.

And so, considering the retail price is similar, you want to see if the Harrisons Longrush would prove to be a comparable / better / worse model?

Harrisons Longrush Mattress Official Description

This beautiful divan contains 5000 revolution and HD (High Density) pocket springs together with a sumptuous wool blend, cotton blend, Egyptian Cotton, Mohair, Latex and Hempure, our own grown crop which is an amazing fibre renowned for its excellent comfort levels with good absorbency, strength and durability. Three rows of side stitching ensure the borders are fastened to the sturdy Revolution springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring system to prevent roll off and the mattress collapsing.

The cover is treated with Amicor Pure, a natural microflora woven in to the fabric cover to suppress bad bacteria and provide a healthier sleeping surface.

Our True Edge Base consisting of 1000 pocket springs provides extra support by a firm row of springs to the perimeter of the base. The base contours perfectly with the mattress for additional comfort and durability.

What you have to do now is separate support (springs) from Comfort (upholstery).

And there we face our first challenge! Apart from a list of upholstery components, how on earth can you tell who is giving you more?

Hypnos Sublime: The Pillowtop section we are told is "A cushion of wool" above the supportive mattress.

We are also told it is upholstered with layers of wool, silk, Talalay latex and non-allergenic white fibre. I would be inclined to ask if the pillowtop section is indeed just a cushion of wool or are all the other components mentioned - included.

The mention of Non-allergenic white fibre - I am assuming this is polyester! Which is, of course, the cheapest component and knowing the actual weight [GSM] of this one part alone will indicate the overall quality of the upholstery. Of course, it would be absolutely ideal if you get to know all the component weights which would put you in a better position to do an educated comparison to the model below.

Harrisons Longrush: Wool blend, Cotton blend, Egyptian Cotton, Mohair, Latex and Hempure.

Again, on the face of it, it looks like a well-upholstered mattress. It makes you wonder if after all this upholstery has been included if there is any room left for the springs! I would be inclined to ask:

  • What the wool is blended with?
  • What the cotton is blended with?
  • What is the overall upholstery weight?
  • What is the weight of Mohair?
  • The depth of Latex?
  • The weight of Hempure?

And there is your dilemma Tim. Unless you have reasonable and adequate means of comparison it is absolutely impossible for you and everyone else to see how they compare side by side.

It is now rather fruitless to begin to compare the differing spring systems of these two manufacturers as that only equates to half the mattress. If you think knowing the weights of upholstery is unimportant or unnecessary - you will be quite wrong.

Our Comparison Models to Hypnos & Harrisons:

Our Artisan Naturals as an example has an upholstery weight of just short of 4 kg per square meter.

Our most expensive Artisan Sublime has an upholstery weight of just over 5kg per square meter. Use this as a good benchmark in relation to any retail price.

If it turns out that either of the mattresses you mention above has a More / Less / Equivalent amount you will be in a better position to make an informed comparison yourself.
