Compatibility with slatted base
Hello,
I'm looking to purchase a pocket sprung mattress however I have read warnings Regarding placing this type of mattress on sprung slats (which our new bed frame has). I have been searching for a suitable mattress and contacted Hypnos recently who advised advised that all their mattresses would be compatible with sprung slats frames. I'm also keen on your Artisan Naturals mattress but would like to know if it's as compatible with sprung slats as Hypnos mattresses are please?

Hi there,
Thank you for your question.
There are many anecdotes on this site and throughout the internet where the mattress develops a central dip known as ‘The Hump Back Bridge Effect’ and this can easily be attributed to the use of a slatted bed frame where the pressure of the slats (the arches) are too firm to ‘give’ under the weight of mattress and user and, therefore, the mattress is prone to settling on the central support bar.
There are of course associated reasons why this happens. The mattress itself can be so unsubstantial and lightweight that the arches on the slats are pushing the internal spring unit out of shape. The underside wadding of the mattress (one sided no turn) has such an inadequate level of support upholstery that the springs are practically forming on to the slats.
All of our pocket sprung mattresses can be used on a slatted base, however, if the base has sprung slats, we would always advise placing some form of barrier, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF, between the base and the mattress. This will make any mattress placed on the base feel slightly firmer but will avoid any ridging occurring as a result of the metal bar which runs along the middle of the base.
I trust that this clarifies the position for you, but if you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to call our office. Kind regards.
