Cool comfy mattress suggestion when moving house?

Hi, we currently have an Original pocket 1500 mattress in a medium pocket spring tension, it's been great but now we've moved house and need another spare bed.

We're putting our current mattress in the spare room and getting a new one for our room. We like the original pocket 1500 and haven't had a bad night sleep in it, but what we feel is missing is getting into it and thinking, 'ah this is very comfy!.

Is there a mattress that you would recommend that gives this feeling?

I'm 6ft6 and nearly 18 stone on a bad day, but the medium has been fine. Misses is about 10 stone. I do get hot in bed.

Thanks, Marcus

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your question about a cool comfortable mattress for your new home. It's great to hear you've already experienced our best selling Origins Pocket 1500 mattress and now want to upgrade!

Many people find that once they've had a decent bed they can't bear to risk anything other than a hand made mattress. Our Origins Pocket 1500 is in our entry range but as you've alluded to there are many more increasingly wonderful models above it.

In terms of wanting that comfy feeling again, you've probably just gotten used the Origins Pocket 1500.
Given the price point of the Origins mattresses, they are limited in terms of the amount of breathable and cooling natural fibre that we can put in them. This is because natural fibre mattresses really don't exist under the £1000 price point. Any retailers telling you their mattresses under this price point are fabricating the exact details of what's inside them. Only nominal sprinklings of natural fibre will exist on top of polyester and white fibre.

If you want the coolest mattress possible then a natural fibre mattress is the way to go for sure. They also last far longer as the fibres are more resilient than synthetic man-made fibres. They keep you warmer in winter and cooler in summer so are well worth the extra investment.

At your weight and height, you are at the top of the medium spring tension. Given you've already had a 1.4 medium pocket sprung mattress we would advise to stick to the same. Your wife would also be fine on this spring tension.
If you're looking for a medium feel mattress in the comfort layers (the upholstery that sit on top of the spring unit) then please have a look at our Artisan Naturals as a starting point.

Its 85% natural fibre and features a calico encased and vanadium coated pocket sprung support system. It also has edge support too. Like the Origins Pocket 1500 it's 2 sided and needs turning each month.

Artisan Naturals Mattress

1: 1200GSM BLENDED BRITISH FLEECE WOOL AND COTTON

2: HAIRPROOF CAMBRIC COVER

3: 1250GSM REBOUND POLY COTTON

4: 1500GSM 100% PURE MOHAIR

5: 1600 CALICO ENCASED POCKET SPRINGS [49MM ] [1.28MM ]

TOTAL:: 3950GSM

DEPTH:: 27-30CM

CHEMICAL FREE COVER

Maybe consider a zip and link mattress model if you want to make turning easier. Zip and links also help isolate transference ie if you and your partner move around a lot at night. The zips are recessed so you don't feel them. For super king size mattresses, a zip and link is a must as most houses struggled to get a one piece up stairs. Given our mattresses at that size are around 75-80kg in weight it makes sense to have them as two more manageable pieces. Just food for thought.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+ A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

We hope that helps Marcus and if you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.
Sleep well
