Hello,

Just last week got new Hypnos mattress. So painful to sleep on for me back.

When laying the tufts becomes loose and about 2 inches just hang out, lumpy fillings and sink in filling by my back causing pain daily.

I’ve not slept since it arrived. Are these loose tufts a fault?

Hi Lorraine,

Thanks for getting in touch asking about a faulty Hypnos mattress sagging and dipping. We're sorry you're having such a poor experience with this new Hypnos mattress. It certainly doesn't sound right in our experience.

Let's have a look at what mattress tufts do and then we can provide some advice on getting back in touch with Hypnos to get the faulty mattress looked at.

What do mattress tufts do?

Mattress tufts serve a really important purpose to keep the fillings contained and reduce the movement of mattress upholstery when you sleep on the bed. Without mattress tufts a natural fibre mattress would son start to settle and nothing would stop fibres from bunching up under the covers.

The secondary purpose of mattress tufts is to help compress the mattress to a more manageable level. Without tufting a 25cm thick mattress would easily be pushing 30-33cm as the fibres are at full 'loft'. Tufting helps compress them and provide a more consistent sleep surface.
Mattress tufts should be taught even when sleeping on the mattress. If they are 2 inches out then they are not serving their purpose which is maybe why the mattress is behaving so unusually. Clearly, this is a fault with your Hypnos mattress.

Mattress Settlement Explained:

With the tuft issue aside its important to look at how you can reduce mattress settlement to stop you getting a bad back. Bad backs in bed are usually a product of poor support or the wrong mattress comfort layers.

All mattresses and beds will settle over the first 3- 6 months of use. This is because the fibres compress and will reach their final resting point at around this time. Remembering that tufting helps keep them consistent. This settlement is natural will all upholstery whether a mattress, bed base, sofa or other furniture.

The way to prevent this becoming a problem is by following two top tips with a new mattress.

  1. Choose a two sided mattress
  2. Turn and flip the mattress each month

It really is important when choosing a new mattress that you pick a two-sided model so it can be turned. This then means you have two sides of the mattress that you can use. Meaning twice the sleeping surface to play with to even out mattress settlement.

This also means that you can turn and flip the mattress each month as part of your mattress care routine. This helps even out the settlement and prevents you from sleeping in the same position each night which over time leads to settlement/dips on those very spots where you frequently sleep.

We are creatures of habit when we sleep using the same positions each night. So rotating and turning the mattress helps even out this natural settlement. It’s particularly important during the first year of mattress ownership. After this all settlements should have occurred. By turning the two sided mattress you help spread this out over the whole mattress surface and not just one part.

We would advise you get in touch with Hypnos about the failed tufts for a resolution.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well!
John & Ryan
