Is there no perfect mattress?
I am at a bit of an impasse on mattresses in general. The wife and I bought a very expensive wool filled enchanted house mattress for a lot of £££ around 5 years ago and went for soft instead of medium. While the mattress is super comfortable and good quality it’s just too soft and we end up sinking quite a lot into it which gives us lower back pain, it also means having to use a very slim profile pillow!
We then after much lying down and testing bought another cheaper mattress from another store which is an Mlily Gel 1000 mattress which is a hybrid pocket spring and gel foam mattress. This mattress offers much more support for us both and we fall asleep quite quickly on it, however we sometimes wake up quite early not feeling comfortable and constantly turning, my wife’s back also hurts and means she can’t easily turn on this mattress which makes us think we should have got the model with more springs (softer).
We can’t win, and I really really don’t want to have to spend another load of money on another mattress and simply think there is no such thing as a perfect mattress, and spending loads of money does not guarantee a good night sleep.
Im now investigating the use of a good quality mattress topper, we already have a woolroom topper for the gel mattress but this makes a tiny difference. Are there any mattress toppers that would either make our very soft wool mattress a firmer, or our gel hybrid mattress softer? I think it would have to be at least 10cm thick to make a difference!
I would be grateful for any suggestions! Both mattresses we have are on solid divan/ottoman bases.
Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for your question. The tension of the springs should be dictated by your height and body weight to provide you with the correct level of support, and not by how you want the mattress to feel.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The Enchanted House mattress has soft upholstery layers, which make this mattress a soft comfort level. Wool is one of the softest fibres used in a mattress. It also has soft spring tension, which only supports body weights up to 11 stone, depending on your height. We discontinued this spring tension some time ago, as many lightweight customers found it to be not supportive enough.
| Upholstery Layer | Fibre Type | How it will feel? |
|---|---|---|
| Polyester | Synthetic | Soft |
| White Fibre | Synthetic | Soft/Medium |
| Recycled Fibre / Eco Fibre | Synthetic | Medium |
| Memory Foam | Synthetic | Medium/Firm |
| Igel / Hybrid Foam | Synthetic | Medium/Firm |
| Polycotton | Synthetic/Natural Blend | Soft/Medium |
| Linen | Synthetic/Natural Blend | Medium |
| Wool (Pure) | Natural | Soft/Medium |
| Cotton (Pure) | Natural | Soft |
| Silk | Natural | Soft |
| Horsehair | Natural | Medium |
| Mohair | Natural | Medium/Firm |
| Hemp | Natural | Medium |
| Latex (100% Natural) | Natural | Medium/Firm |
| Coir | Natural | Firm |
| Flax | Natural | Firm |
| Coarse Cashmere | Natural | Firm |
| Bamboo | Natural | Super Soft |
| Horsetail | Natural | Firm |
| Alpaca | Natural | Soft |

The only Mlily gel mattress with 1000 springs that I have been able to find any information on is an Orthopaedic mattress. The springs within this mattress are extra firm, which means you need to weigh at least 20 stone to activate them. If the springs are not active and moving with you as you move around on the mattress, you are not supported. This mattress has a 2 cm layer of quilted memory foam infused with gel and a 4cm layer of firm flex foam.
The upholstery layers or foam density should be determined by your sleep positions and comfort preferences. We do not recommend soft upholstery layers for front and back sleepers, as sinking in too much in these positions can cause lower back and neck pain. Likewise, we do not recommend firm upholstery layers for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees.

A mattress topper is designed to soften the overall feel of a mattress. Unfortunately, there is no way to alter the support from the springs within the mattress. When looking for a mattress topper, we recommend choosing one that is going to complement the mattress, however, it is very unlikely that you would be able to get a natural fibre firm topper for your Enchanted House mattress. I would recommend a firm density natural latex topper for this mattress and a soft density natural latex topper for the Mlily mattress.
I hope this helps, and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
