Thank you for your question. The closest mattress in our range to the John Lewis Natural Collection Fleece Wool is the Artisan Bespoke 004. The medium level of comfort in the upholstery layers provides cushioning for your shoulders and hips when side sleeping, while the natural wool and cotton layers offer excellent temperature regulation and breathability. The John Lewis Natural Collection Fleece Wool in a medium tension (which relates to the pocket spring tension based on your bodyweight) will suit sleepers from 9-16 stone. This is because the 1.4 spring unit is made specifically for this weight range. This mattress model uses some natural upholstery but blends the fibres, which dilutes their individual properties. Blending fibres should only be done to help address the drawbacks of certain fibres such as low lofts. However, retailers are now using multiple excessive blends to increase the amount of ‘Natural fibres’ described as being contained within the mattress.

Based on our experience and the detail John Lewis provided, we can estimate the following.

1. British Wool & Viscose (500GSM estimate)
2. Egyptian cotton, Hemp, Flax and Cotton Blend (1000GSM estimate)

For the Hypnos Elite, as Hypnos does not publish the exact GSM (grams per square metre) of their fillings, a precise comparison is difficult. You can read more about the GSM in mattresses here. The Hypnos Elite is a really firm mattress better suited to people who are used to a very supportive mattress. It has no similarities to the John Lewis model, which is a medium-feel, forgiving mattress. Unless you're over 16 stone in body weight, we would avoid the Hypnos model unless you really like a super-firm night's sleep, which most people don't.

The tension of the pocket springs should be dictated by your heights and body weights. Pocket springs are designed to hold your body weight during the night so that you are supported correctly. Incorrect spring tension can lead to lower back pain.

Regarding your bed base, if the gap between your fixed slats is less than 3 inches, we recommend covering them with an old duvet or blanket to protect the underside of the mattress from indentations. If the gap is wider than 3 inches, we suggest boarding over the slats with MDF or plywood to ensure a uniform surface and proper support for the pocket springs.
