Looking for ultra firm mattress

A customer asked

Hi, I'm around 96kg and suffer from back pain (disc).

I have been struggling to find an ultra firm mattress.

I am only going to stay in the UK for approximately two and a half years.

Therefore, I don't want to spend a lot of money on a mattress that I'm going to leave.

My bed is a divan super king size.

Two times I've bought reflex foam mattress on ebay BUT unfortunately they sink and never goes up again, i.e.

it takes the shape of my body and remains that way.

Could you kindly advise me what type of mattress is suitable and WHERE could I find one with a reasonable price.

Furthermore, is possible that a divan base can destroy a mattress.

Thank you, Best, Ray >

Hi Ray,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website. I note your dilemma regarding spending a large amount on something you are going to leave behind in 2 years time, however, thrift may prove a downfall.  This is because, as you are probably aware, you can buy cheap mattresses, which suit your budget, but this may prove false economy as you would need to replace it in the short term and usually, cheap usually means not well made.

The advice used to be that you needed a firm mattress for any back problems but this is no longer the case.  What is recommended is that you get the correct support.  This is achieved with the correct spring tension for your body weight.  You would need a medium spring tension for the right support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The upholstery layers are dictated by personal preferences and sleeping habits.  If you are a side sleeper we wouldn't recommend anything too firm in the comfort layers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees.  Have a look at the different models in our Origins range.  This will help you when visiting showrooms as all of our products detail exactly what materials are used and how much of each we put into our mattresses.  Also, bear in mind that when visiting showrooms you do not know how long a mattress has been on display and how many customers of varying body weights have already softened the comfort layers and the one you purchase will feel firmer.

I hope this was helpful and if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.  Our office hours are 8 am – 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am – 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela.
