Am I correct in assuming all of your mattresses are white? The colour choice is for the base and not the mattress?

If I choose to go for the Origins Pocket 1500 mattress, my existing sheets will not be wide enough to tuck in. Have mattress depth's changed so much over the years?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Elizabeth,

Many thanks for your comment asking about mattress depths and colours. It's a really good one.

All of our mattresses are white, along with 99% of all other retail mattresses. Why is this? Why not for example a bright blue mattress? Well its simple, Most people don't want the colour of the mattress showing through their fitted sheets. Put simply white or off white is the best base colour to match with fitted sheets bedroom decor etc.

The other thing is that white is often seen as a clean colour and doesn't hide stains well. This means that It's easy to spot any potential stains and use mild detergents to remove the stains without removing portions of coloured fabric. So white all round is more fitting, robust and practical.

Yes, there are a number of new mattress companies out there with Yellow mattresses such as Eve and other boxed rolled foam mattresses. However, we prefer to stick with white which is a much better fit for decor and cleaning reasons. It must be said though that you should always use a removable mattress protector to take the brunt of any staining, sweat or bodily fluids. This way it can be removed and machine washed as mattress surfaces should only ever be sponged to remove stains and allowed to air dry.

Coloured Mattress Bases:

All of our hand made mattress bases are available in a number of colours and fabric choices. This is where your inner interior designer can go to town in making the mattress base bespoke to your bedroom taste! Whether you're a fan of neutral colourways or bright vibrant colour palettes our bed frames, divans and headboards come in an exciting range of over 30 total colour combinations.

Mattress Depths Explained:

It's a good point you make about mattress depths and yes they have changed significantly over the years. The reason for this is that on the whole, the construction level of mattress has improved over the last 2 decades. Not because big retailers want to give you more for your money, more than small independent hand made mattress companies have become more accessible with the rise of online stores, like ours. Meaning we can offer far more for your money in making high GSM (Grams per square meter) mattresses, like the traditional high-end mattresses (such as Savoir and Vispring), just with a more affordable price tag. This has led to the big manufacturers stuffing their mattresses with unnecessary layers of micro springs and more polyester to try and compete.

All of our mattresses are between 27-33cm deep. So you will need extra deep fitted sheets.

The minimum depth of a quality mattress is around 23-25cm (if solid core latex) if not a 25cm deep sprung mattress is the minimum you should be looking at.

Anything less than this is going to contain significantly fewer fillings, meaning a shorter lifespan and less comfort. Think of a cushion with half its fillings missing as a comparison! It soon goes flat and is uncomfortable to use.

Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress:

Our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress is one of our best selling models. It beats all other retail mattress competitors at the same price when comparing the filling amounts, spring type and build quality. It is 30-33cm deep as its hand-tufted. You will need extra deep fitted sheets. It's also two-sided so needs turning every month which should keep it lasting far in excess of the guarantee period.

The pocket spring gauge is a 1.4 suited for sleepers 9 stone to 16 stone. If above 16 stone then a 1.6 firmer spring gauge can be chosen. It has a true medium feel in the mattress upholstery/comfort layers.

How much to spend on a new mattress?:

Here's some guidance on what to expect for your money when it comes to buying a new mattress. Remembering that you need to know exactly what's inside each mattress you are looking at making note of the spring tension and amount of fillings in grams per square meter.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
