Francesca Franklin

Hi, I'm 55 and since my early 20s have suffered with chronic back and neck pain. I also have mild scoliosis which pushes my rib age forward on my left side. I was then diagnosed with fibromyalgia 10 years ago, which, as my spine gets worse the fibro pain does too. I have yearly nerve blocks and caudal epidural for the back pain and 6 monthly lidocaine infusions for the fibro. I also take heavy duty prescription pain meds and lidocaine patches, but I'm never pain free. I sleep badly due to pain and I am convinced that if I could get just sleep better my pain would be less fierce. I've had surgery on my Lower back and to both shoulders. I'm a side sleeper, foetal position, I think my body favours this as it opens up my discs. The trouble is pressure points. Mainly the hip bursa, they are so sore that the pain is now constant there, across the top of my back below the neck and shoulders. My My current mattress is 13 years old so I know it's ready to be replaced. It's a handmade Burgess beds Blenheim king size. I've recently added a pure wool topper from Baavet. But I feel every lump bump and crease because of the fibromyalgia. I toss and turn all night trying to aliviate areas where pain is building, it feels like I'm never fully asleep as I'm constantly aware of pain and or pressure. Ive actually removed the clock from my bedroom as I was always checking it with every move and 20 mins seems to be my longest period that I don't have to shift position. I was really happy with the mattress up until maybe 2 years ago, my condition really worsened around then. I've been looking at Hypnos ortho gold, opurest, Simba, eve, Casper and all these new makes that are currently popping up making amazing claims. My concern is I only have £1000 really to spend and I'm scared to make a commitment only to find I've made a mistake. I know this is complex but some help or guidance would be so gratefully appreciated.i have a king size bed with flat base and I sleep alone. Kind regards Francesca

Hi Francesca,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The first thing to say is that whatever mattress you eventually decide to purchase will only be able to provide temporary relief from the issues you are experiencing, particularly if your condition continues to deteriorate.

Whilst we appreciate that you have provided a considerable amount of detail in respect of your medical conditions, we are not able to advise whether any of the products you mention will be suitable without this information, although the published details in respect of construction and upholstery in terms of GSM (grams per square metre) are limited.

Your sleeping habits/personal preference will then determine how you would like the mattress to feel in the comfort layers. This is where you will achieve the feel you are looking for (soft/medium/firm). With your condition, I would always recommend the softest mattress possible in the upper layer paired with the right spring tension based subjectively on your body weight. This would be either the Origins Comfort 1000 or the Artisan Luxury.
