Mattress for me

Richard Martin

Hi,
I suffer from back problems (too much desk work) and my physio advised me to buy a firm (but not too firm) spring pocket mattress and avoid the highly marketed online brands (simba, Eve) as well as Tempur. He said Vi-spring is good but expensive.
He says not to use memory foam but a thin layer would be okay if I want to feel extra comfort. I have been recommended something like the Silent Night Ashford (pocket & memory layer)
Whilst I was internet browsing I came across your site and read some of the FAQs
My height it 5'9 and my weight is 11 stone and I will most likely be using a King Size Divan. Would you be able to recommend one or two suitable King Size mattresses and whether to use them with a solid or sprung Divan? My budget is between £800 - £1,600

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your enquiry. While we appreciate your physio's advice, we would say that with your body weight a medium spring tension mattress is most appropriate. Previous medical advice used to be that if you have back problems you ought to opt for a firm mattress, however, of late, that advice has been contradicted by organisations such as the Institute of Chiropractors. What is required is the correct spring tension to provide support with upholstery layers to provide the required comfort.

We are not able to provide an opinion as to the quality and performance of the Silent Night product because the published details of the construction and upholstery are minimal. This also makes providing any form of comparison impossible. A recommendation would need to take into account your preference regarding upholstery, man-made or natural.

Artisan Naturals mattress

If looking at man-made upholstery, the Origins Pocket 1500 has a standard medium tension spring unit together with upholstery providing an overall medium feel and is the best selling product in that range. If natural upholstery is your preference, then please view the Artisan Naturals, Artisan Bespoke 004 or Artisan Bespoke, all of which can have the spring tension selected to suit. The Naturals and 004 will provide a similar feel in the upholstery even though the Naturals has 85% natural upholstery compared to 100% in the 004. The Bespoke, on the other hand, has the most upholstery in the range and this will provide a slightly firmer feel in the top layers. The Artisan Naturals is the best selling product in that range.

The Origins range usually are paired with a platform topped base, whereas the Artisans are paired with sprung bases and both can be used on slatted bed frames, provided that some protection is afforded to the underside of the mattress to avoid ridging occurring.

We trust that the above is of help to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.

Kind regards.
