Hi there,
Thanks for such an informative and open site. My partner and I have been looking at a new mattress and bed and have recently encountered the Opulessence Connoisseur, my questions relates to it's comfort and covering. Firstly it has been by far the most comfortable mattress my partner and I have tried in store. We are not the tallest or heaviest of couples, 5ft 7ins and 11 stone and 5ft 2ins and 8 stone. My partner is a big fan of soft mattresses, I however can sleep on anything really. In regards it's outer/covering, it appears in store to be a brushed/flocked cotton or cotton mix, which she is in love with, I have yet to find anything close to it online. Could you advise the likely longevity and/or an alternative?

Hi Wilykat1981,

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

The details on the Opalescence Connoisseur are super vague, to say the least.

  • 2500 pocket spring pillow top mattress
  • Key fillings: 100mm Memory Foam
  • Hand-tufted
  • No need to turn
  • Comfort Grade – Medium
  • Made in the UK

It doesn't reference the spring tension, gauge or tensile strength which we would need to know, more on that here.

We know it is a pillowtop mattress which we always advise against, given they fail so quickly and practically ruin the mattress. You can't take these off when they fail so you're stuck with a lumpy bumpy mattress which you can't turn over. No need to turn is a bit of a marketing scam or gimmick, as there are very few legitimate reasons to buy a no turn mattress. You can read more on that here, but any naturally upholstered mattress should be two-sided unless it's half the price that is! ;-)

It features memory foam which is why it has that softer feel. We would advise that you try a memory foam mattress before fully committing to one. Many people find them unbearably hot in the summer months and there are better alternatives such as latex, like our Fusion range which are far cooler and 100% natural. Have a look at our Fusion 3 for a solid core latex mattress that will give you a softer sink but with medium support. It is fully two-sided and comes with a removable topper than can be turned and rotated also.

If you want a traditional mattress why not look at our Artisan Luxury model, our softest in the range and jam packed with huge amounts of natural fibres. If you want to compare this to other models, ask the retailer the GSM of each upholstery layer to compare, we have a guide on why knowing the GSM is so important when looking for a mattress.

Once you've had a look at those maybe get back in touch on 0161 437 4419, to help answer any further questions. We look forward to hearing from you!

Kind Regards Gary
