Mattress sloping causing me to roll out of bed
Hi
We have paid over £2500 for a Somnus Marquis king sized with the matching Divan. We have had it 3,months and have rotated and turned it every 2 or 3 weeks but the matteress slopes down outwards from the middle to such an extent that I cannot lie flat but feel I I am lying at an angle and have on several occasions fallen out of bed. This is the second matteres we have had in 9 months and this was a replacement for the Jewel that we bought in Novenber last year. The jewel had exactly the same issues and when the Harrison Spinks specialist looked at it he said it was faulty straight away.
I suffer from a form of MS that has left me with impaired functionality from the waist down and struggle to move myself around in bed. The illness has pushed my weight up to 19 stone. The illness and weight gain happened in early 2014 prior to buying the new bed and it was very clear that I was a larger sized lady and the chap that sold us the bed was tall and overweight too, probably heavier than myself and also owned a Sombus bed (possibly a fib but who knows ). If my weight was causing the problem I would expect that my sleeping area but be sinking in as I lie on my back for most if not all night as I am not able to move easily. My husband is 14 1/2 stone and he is having similar problems. This is the most we have ever spent and we are so unhappy with it.
I am going to go back to the shop tomorrow to restart the process again of getting Somnus to investigate and we are preparing to ask them to upgrade us to two single matteress so that this should not happen again. I expect we will have to pay extra again. Turning the matteress is a horrifying prospect each time we do it. I have to help but am very weak. God knows how an elderly couple would cope. The matteress probably weighs more than me, possibly more than both of us.
Can you shed any light on why our matteress keeps doing this? I expected a very very comfortable sleeping experience and instead have walked in to a nightmare. Each time I fall out of bed I have been alone and with my disability it has taken over 30 minutes to struggle to get up and as we have dogs they think it is a game and jump all over me. I am at my wits end ???
Kind regards
Michaela Hunt
Hi Michaela,
Thank you for your question. I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with your mattress. We understand that getting a good night's sleep is very important, especially when you are dealing with medical issues. There could be several reasons why you are rolling out of bed, or a combination of factors. My first thought would be edge support. You would be surprised at how many high-end mattress manufacturers do not add additional support, other than the hand side stitching. You can read more about mattress edge support here.

If the edges of the mattress are soft or lack sufficient support, sitting or sleeping near the edge can cause the mattress to compress significantly, leading to a slipping or rolling sensation. We use butterfly clips in our Origins range; within our Artisan natural fibre range, we use two rows of firmer springs along with hand side stitching for edge support.
Another consideration for your issue could be incorrect support. At the body weights you have supplied, we would pair you with the firm spring tension and your husband with the medium spring tension to provide you both with the correct level of support. If you are inadequately supported, the edge springs may compress too much, causing the edge of the mattress to give way under you. Our in-depth article on choosing the correct spring tension can be found here.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
