Natural chemical free mattress
Looking to buy above that is also back and hip supportive and firm
Was recommended the Winstons ancoats but wanted your opinion on something comparable you offer that also ideally isn't tufted but if tufted has very soft tufts that you cannot feel when sleeping (some mattresses have plastic or hard tufts that can dig in overnight)
In the similar price range of course.
Hi Igor,
Thank you for your question. When looking for a new mattress, you need to know your height and body weight to determine the correct level of support and your sleep positions and comfort preferences, how you would like the mattress to feel, to determine which upholstery layers would be the most suitable. You should also consider the type of mattress, whether you are looking for a traditional pocket sprung mattress or a foam type mattress.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The spring tension is based on your height and weight to provide the correct support. If you have a firm spring and you weigh less than 17 stone, you will not activate the springs, which means you will not be supported correctly.
The upholstery layers on top of the springs determine how the mattress feels. Each mattress contains different amounts of fibres, this is known as the GSM of each fibre, and they are layered in different ways to create a certain level of comfort. The Winston's Ancoates mattress is described as a softer medium level of comfort. The closest mattress in our range is the Artisan Luxury. This mattress is constructed with 100% natural fibres, which provide a cooler sleep surface and help you to regulate your body temperature. This mattress is ideal for side sleepers, however, this may be too soft if you sleep on your front or back. Sinking into the upholster too much in these positions can cause lower back and neck pain. All of our Artisan Classic range of mattresses utilise a plant fibre fire retardant, which means they all have a chemical-free outer ticking.

All natural fibre mattresses are tufted, these are essential to hold all the comfort layers in place. The tufts have either plastic or metal ends, similar to treasury tags for paper. If the ends were soft, they would just pull through the mattress and not hold anything in place. The ends of the tufts are then covered with either wool or polyester pompoms for comfort. If you find that you are sensitive to the tufts, adding a natural fibre mattress topper can help.

If you require a non-tufted mattress, you would be better with 100% natural latex, which provides a more moulding feel than cushioning. Latex is much more breathable and responsive than memory foam, but gives the same pressure relief.
I hope this helps, and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
