One-sided mattresses and topper combinations
I have two separate mattress questions:
1. If you placed the Coolblue topper on top of the Laygel topper with a reflex foam base, would this create a good foam mattress, maybe like a Tempur Cloud? Or the Laygel on top of the Coolblue with a reflex foam base. Or do these two foams not work well together like this?
2. Would you ever make one-sided versions of your mattresses? I understand the benefits of a two-sided mattress but it would be nice to get the comfort of one of your highest quality mattresses at half the price even if it has a shorter lifespan.
Thanks
Hi Sean,
Thanks for getting in touch to ask about one sided mattresses.
As you may have read on our site we don't recommend 99% of one sided mattresses. Mainly because retailers use it as a trick to fool you into thinking its benefit when really it's just a chance for them to save money by reducing the fillings within mattresses. Which we don't think is fair or in consumers best interests.
There are 2 'one sided mattress types' that we approve of.
- The only one sided mattresses we approve of is when natural latex is used or high end fibres that cannot be turned with a pocket spring unit or they would get damaged by the weight. There are only a few of these fibres that this applies to. Hence the 1% of one sided mattresses we agreed with usually have Talalay latex on top of a pocket spring unit. It couldn't be two sided or the softer and expensive Talalay would be crushed by the spring unit and sleepers weight. It really is one of the only exceptions.
- Where sleepers are highly sensitive to tufts we sometimes recommend a higher end quilted one sided mattress. Quilted mattresses don't hold natural fibre and upholstery layers as effectively as tufted mattresses. For sleepers who can't stand tufts then a quilted natural fibre one sided mattress is the only real alternative. Quilted mattresses suit one sided models better to remove the need to hold the fibres so consistently, as the mattress isn't being turned.
To answer your questions you could quite happily layer up those foams on top of a reflex base and create a Tempur like mattress. In fact, we used to make these, but demand started to fall due to natural fibres being far more breathable. So we discontinued them. Mixing those two toppers with a reflex foam base will give a similar feel to the Tempur Cloud.
We only make one 'no turn' mattress which is the Origins Pocket Latex, due to the Talalay latex layers. Which you can view more on below.
Origins Pocket Latex 1500
1: 300GSM WOOL SILK BLEND PAD
2: 3CM TALALAY LATEX (60/40% BLEND) 70KG DENSITY
3: 3CM TALALAY LATEX (60/40% BLEND) 70KG DENSITY
4: ONE INCH HD FOAM
5: 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS (MEDIUM OR FIRM TENSION)
TOTAL DEPTH 30-33CM
As for the mattresses being half the price, we wouldn't compromise the overall quality of our models by removing half the fillings. In terms of manufacturing effort, it would be the same amount of work to hand make the mattress. Our Artisan mattress models take around 21 days to hand-make. It may cost slightly less but you'd reduce the overall life span and robustness of the mattress which is why we would never do it as I'm sure you can understand.
We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.
