Thinking of buying a 90 cm Matt Air memory foam  mattress with separate  standard base. The mattress is part sprung . 1050 premium pocket springs with edge support. Temp regulating smart fabric .Pressure relieving memory foam . Felt comfy to lie on. I am not sure what the spring number means ? Slumberland is the bed name . This is a single bed but does get used to needs to be comfy . I don’t think an all  spring mattress is what I am looking for. Thanks kind regards : Diana

Hi Diana,

Thank you for your question. Slumberland produce a number of Air mattresses. From your description, I am assuming that you are looking at the Slumberland Air 2.0 mattress. Please let us know if this is not the case.

There is no comfort rating for this memory foam mattress, which has 1050 pocket springs (in a king size), however, there is an option for medium or firm 'comfort'. This option is usually related to the spring tension. The medium spring tension supports body weights up to 17 stone and the firm spring tension supports body weights between 17 stone and 22 stone (depending on your height). The number of springs is not as important as the gauge of wire used to make the springs. Anywhere between 1000 and 1500 springs will provide the correct support as long as the gauge of wire used is suitable for your height and body weight to provide you with the correct level of support.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

Memory foam does provide pressure relief, especially for side sleepers, whose shoulders and hips require more cushioning. Memory foam requires body heat as well as pressure to be able to mould to you, and is very heat-retentive as this heat doesn't dissipate but does feed it back to the sleeper. This mattress states that the outer ticking regulates body temperature.

  • Temperature+ treated fabric – helps regulate body temperature for sleep comfort and designed to rehydrate the skin whilst you sleep

Temperature-treated fabrics are textiles that have undergone a process to enhance their resistance to high or low temperatures, offering properties like heat insulation, fire resistance, or cooling capabilities. These fabrics are designed to withstand extreme thermal conditions, protect against heat damage, or regulate body temperature. This mattress has been accredited as memopause friendly.

  • MTick accredited menopause-friendly mattress – endorsed by GenM, the independent menopause partner for brands, for helping to alleviate night sweats, one of the 48 signs of menopause.

Our only mattress that would be comparable in terms of construction is the Origins Pocket Latex 1500 mattress. This mattress has 1500 medium tension pocket springs and 2 layers of Talalay latex comfort layers. Latex is much more breathable and responsive than memory foam. The way that both Latex and memory foam work is that they require pressure to be able to mould to you, which means the lighter your body weight, the firmer the overall feel of the mattress will be and vice versa.

When you try a mattress in a showroom, you will not always get a true representation of how the mattress will feel, as many potential customers will already have softened the upholstery layers. A new mattress will always feel firmer as the upholstery layers are compacted during manufacturing, and it takes you sleeping and moving around on the mattress to soften them. This is lessened with a memory foam mattress, which will soften a little. I would recommend checking the returns policy as it can take 4 - 6 weeks for your body to adjust to a new mattress.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419, and we will be able to advise you further.

Kind Regards,

Michaela
