Dear John,We are very nervous about purchasing one of your beds online. My husband has had a right side hip replacement and our current Millbrook pocket sprung king size 2,700 spring bed with sprung base that is only about 5 years old is now no good.My husband is sleeping in a dip[both sides of the bed even if it is turned] and I am rolling backwards toward him and we are suffering back pain. This top range bed was giving us trouble from about 9 months old after the loft came down with buttons coming off and sticking in us.It has cashmere, silk, wool, mohair etc...We looked at the base to see if its faulty. We have faithfully turned it every month for years. Not bent it or stood on it.We use three tog 10 duvets on top to make it even bearable to sleep on.But,we were told Millbrook luxury beds last up to 10 years.[like you say also about yours?]We have come to the conclusion horsehair filling is the key to a bed lasting longer.I phoned millbrook and none of their beds have this filling. My husband is 17 stone and six foot three and I am 15 stone. Our millbrook bed is medium. We went to bristol from cardiff to try the vi spring tiara for comparison to your artisan 2 natural pocket sprung bed.We want to get two single beds this time.He tried the firm tension in Vispring Tiara and liked it.I tried the medium and rolled off the bed. This happened with all the vi spring beds I tried and my back hurt. Now you say that someone my weight of 15 stone would only need a medium tension in yours but I liked the firm the same as my husband in the tiara vi spring bed. This is now very confusing to us.We thought maybe if we got one single to start from yourselves in the firm with the pocket spring firm edge for my husband and see how he got on and then if I tried it and it suited would get another for myself.I have a slipping bulging disc in my back. What do you suggest.?Also, how many springs are in the base and inside the single size mattress of the artisan 2.Are they as good as vispring. The salesman showed us inside their divan pocket sprung bases too. Also what difference if any would there be in comfort from the artisan 2 and the artisan 4? Sorry to ask so much but we do need to know before a possible purchase.Thankyou.Ros and mike sparkes.

Hi Rosalind,

I am sorry to hear of your mattress woes in respect of your relatively young Millbrook product. It does sound as if it has failed in some way, as I would not expect it to develop a dip of the type you describe, particularly if your have been turning and rotating it regularly.

Having said that, your Husband is on the cusp of a medium and firm tension in terms of his body weight and it may be that in the Millbrook construction, his weight may be unsuitable for a medium and could result in failure.

As you are aware, the description of the Millbrook in terms of upholstery is very general and not specific enough to provide the GSM (grams per square metre) of each of the fillings to enable any form of comparison with any other product.

I note that you have tried the Vi-Spring Tiara in a firm spring tension and both liked it, however, what you will not be aware of is how long that product has been on display. Display models will always feel entirely different to a brand new product in the same tension because the display model will have had some wear attributed to the number of people who have lain on it and this can have implications in terms of how it will feel and how the upholstery will feel.

Going off your husband's height as well as his body weight, I would suggest that a medium spring tension would be suitable for you both.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The Artisan Bespoke 002 is similar in feel to the Vi-Spring Tiara and has firm springs around the perimeter to prevent the "roll off" effect. I think that your suggestion of buying one to start with to see if it suits both is very sensible and I would reiterate that you should opt for medium spring tension. In the Artisan Bespoke 002 there are 1330 springs in the single size and these are vanadium steel, which is the same as Vi-Spring and our's has a gauge of 1.40 with a diameter of 56. There are 600 springs in the single base.

The Artisan Bespoke 002 has, as you know a double layer of springs, meaning that in comparison to the Bespoke 004 it is more forgiving and provides an overall softer sinking sensation. I appreciate your concern about having all the information available before purchasing, but please bear in mind that you would have a 60 day "love it or return it" guarantee. This should not be viewed as a "try before you buy option" as we endeavour to match the product to the customer and in 96% of instances we get this spot on, which why we are confident to offer this guarantee.

I trust that the above is of assistance to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office.

Kind Regards Gary
