Researching Harrison Spinks beds

A customer asked

Hello, I came across your informative site searching about Harrison Spinks beds. I wonder if you could give me some advice please on what mattress to choose?

I am just about 8 stone, female and 5' 4", I sleep in a double bedstead on a slatted frame by myself. I am currently trying to choose between 3 which are Vi-Spring Dartmoor Superb Mattress double £899.00 at John Lewis, John Lewis Natural Collection Cotton 3000 Mattress, Double £599.00 or NEXT 2000 Pocket Sprung Ultimate Natural Mattress double £675.00. The NEXT one seems to look quite good but may be rubbish?

I like the feel of soft and cosy but still want my spine to be supported . I find if a bed is too firm parts (pressure points I guess) of me hurt /ache when I wake up as I don't think I move about very much when asleep. I also don't think I like deep mattress tufts as I don't think I am heavy enough to not feel them, plus being a bit bony I can quite easily feel springs on a mattress too. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards

Hi Helen,

Thanks for your question.

The Dartmoor and John Lewis Natural Collection mattresses are made exclusively for John Lewis so we struggle to comment on these models fully.

The Dartmoor appears to be a very soft mattress due to the construction using British Fleece Wool. Both the Natural Collection mattress and Next mattress don't disclose any specifics in regards to fillings so it's difficult to comment fully.

With ourselves, our Artisan range, is a range of traditional pocket sprung mattresses with natural fillings. These natural fillings provide a cool sleep surface similar to the Vi-Spring and Natural collection; Ideal for anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper. However, this entire range is tufted as this is needed to keep the fillings in place. You may find that you need to purchase a mattress topper to prevent this sensation.

You would need a Soft spring tension at your body weight to get the right level of support but it also appears that you might be more suited to a soft mattress in the top layers because of your weight. Our Artisan Luxury is our softest mattress in the top layers giving that full sink in to the top layer. We compare this model with the Vi-Spring Devonshire that can be found in stores such as Furniture Village, Harrods, House of Fraser or And So To Bed.

Please note that sleep is very personal so what one person feels another person doesn't. You shouldn't feel the springs in our Artisan range as there is a high GSM of fillings; Generally the higher the GSM the better a mattress is considered to be. As mentioned previously though you might need to add a mattress topper.
