Settlement on Dreamland beds

A customer asked

Dear Boys, Please can you give some advice.

Bought a Dreamland Aleena 5ft bed, made up of 1000 pocket springs, multi layers of luxury fillings slow recovery foam with a breathable airflow border. There is also a label which states it is hypoallergenic. My husband and I are quite light, but when we slept on this bed, only for a few nights, we couldn't believe the indentations that were left. We had friends stay for 2 weeks who are both very heavy and the indentations are now measuring 35mm. We have asked the bed company for a replacement bed or our money back but they have refused and are saying this is normal.

We have contacted Dreamland Beds Birmingham and have been told they do not think these indentations should happen and trying to help us out have suggested they will change the bed without us saying anything to the shop we bought the bed from. Unfortunately after trying the other beds from this company it meant us paying another £200 which we can't really as we are both pensioners and this is a spare bed.

We have a dunlopillo, which we have had for 10 years and still is as firm as when we bought it, this was well worth the extra money, but we do not have this sort of money now. What I would like to know, is do you think this should happen?

Is this normal with memory foam. The indentations are still there and our friends went come 2 weeks today. Please can you help?

Hi Cathy.

The description for this bed states "..1000 count pocket, non tufted, memory foam, air flow system, cream panel" and thats it.

Absolutely no indication on what these multi layers of luxury fillings actually consist of. However, you do have to take into account what you paid for this.

A quick search shows me the kingsize mattress is around the £200 mark and the non storage divan set is around the £300 mark.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+ A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

Despite the dubious description proffered, I don't particularly think you could reasonably expect more. In hindsight, your money could have been better spent i.e. buying a basic pocket sprung mattress and complementing this with an additional memory foam topper.

And even now I do think this is your best option.

Use the mattress as the support and purchase a separate (relatively inexpensive) memory foam topper of at least 2" in depth for the comfort.

Hope this helps Cathy, and sorry this is not the answer you were probably hoping for.

All mattresses within this price range are pretty much of a muchness, the trick is to improve them yourself as described above rather than expecting the mattress alone to fulfil all your requirements.
