Simba Hybrid mattress too firm - what is the alternative?
We just bought the Simba hybrid mattress and it’s way too hard for me and has given me lower back ache sadly.
I’m 8.5/9 stone (5ft4) most the time and my hubby is 13 stone (6ft).
I like a medium/firm feel mattress and hubby likes soft/medium feel in a bed. What would be the best super king bed for us? Can’t try any because of covid and need mattress advice!
Hi Becci,
Thanks for getting in touch with us about the Simba Hybrid mattress that you're finding too hard for you.
As you've identified, too firm a mattress can actually cause all sorts of aches and pains in the night which is why it's so important to make sure you choose the correct support in a mattress.
What most people confuse is support and comfort when choosing a new bed. The support element, ideally pocket springs, is always based on your weight and has little bearing in the comfort or 'feel' of the mattress. Most people choose the wrong support or spring tension. We explain exactly how to do this with the video guide below.
The Simba Hybrid mattress is a 100% synthetic man made mattress using Simbas version of memory foam. The main complaint from people who get in touch with us over Simba mattresses is that they retain far more heat when compared to natural breathable fibres and they are very slow to react for people who need to move during the night. This is where te frequent complaint that they are 'hard' comes from. This is because all synthetic foams are slower to react than non-foam upholstery. They allow a slow soft sink but also require the same slow return to their original shape which can be uncomfortable for some sleepers.
One of the main problems with all foam boxed mattresses is that they are one-sided. Meaning you can only ever use one side and they often suffer from settlement far faster than two-sided models. What's worrying is they often cost the same price as the 2 sided alternative!
The other issue with most boxed mattresses is that you don't actually get given any real mattress detail from the companies. Have a look at the listing from Simba below.
- BREATHABLE SLEEP SURFACE
- OPEN-CELL FOAM LAYER
- UNIQUE PATENTED TITANIUM AEROCOIL® SPRING-COMFORT LAYER
- HIGH DEFINITION FOAM WITH EDGE SUPPORT
- ZONED SUPPORT BASE
There's no detail of the Grams per square meter of the upholstery (which allows you to know how thick these layers are), there's no data on the foam (ie density, hardness or depth), the spring unit has no details either such as tension or spring count. Meaning its really hard to compare this mattress to other models, or know any real detail on its components.
The aerocoil Simba springs look very much like micro springs which we refuse to use.
Micro springs are the 'latest trend' in mattress sales. Usually retails use these to help inflate the spring count, which may sound like a benefit but given the lack of support these tiny springs offer it can be misleading. We prefer to use a traditional full size pocket spring and add extra upholstery vs layers of near useless springs.
Alternative to the Simba Hybrid:
Have a look at our Origins Pocket 1500 as a comparator to the Simba Hybrid model. Unlike the Simba mattress, it is two-sided so can and should be turned each month. It also has a wool top layer for better breathability. It will give you both that medium feel you need whilst offering the right level of support from the 1.4 medium gauge pocket spring unit. This is the correct spring tension for both your bodyweights.
