A customer asked

Hi there, I must confess I have spent several hours now reading your website and I am awed by your knowledge and expertise. I went into a bed shop today and I had to teach the so called "expert" a thing or two (politely I must add, although this wasn't my purpose for reading). So hat's off to you!

Now my q: What would you say is a good GSM for a double polyester mattress topper (disregarding the cost factor)?

I have a natural filling duvet at the moment and I don't like how everything seems to move around inside, hence why I'm going for a synthetic material. Would love to hear from you!

Sorry my weight is 9 stones and my mrs is 7 stone. Haq >

Hi Haq.

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, most toppers do not generally have an associated GSM weight attached. The Grams per Square Metre measures the weight and density of the fibre fillings inside a mattress or topper. We have an in-depth article about GSM here.

Different fibres offer varying feels and properties:

- Wool & Cotton: Provide a soft feel and excellent breathability to regulate body temperature.
- Horsetail / Horsehair: Adds a firmer, more supportive feel.
- Alpaca & Bamboo: Deliver a super soft, luxurious feel.
- Microfibre & Polyester: Adds a soft feel with high loft.

In terms of mattress toppers, both the fibre type and the thickness determine how much softness and depth it adds to your mattress. A thinner 5 cm topper will offer a slight tweak in cushioning, whereas a 10 cm topper adds substantial depth and softness. A topper's main function is to provide an additional comfort layer to soften the overall feel that will protect the underlying upholstery layers and prolong the lifespan of your mattress. We usually recommend a mattress topper that complements the fibres within the mattress. You can read more about choosing a mattress topper here.

I personally used a spare duvet under the sheet when my mattress was new for a little extra cushioning, which I removed once the upholstery layers had settled. If you are looking to add a soft down-like feel to your mattress, you could consider our Hotel Quality Dual Layer mattress topper, which has a high 1000 GSM with an overall depth of 9cm. Our generously filled Micro Fibre mattress topper with 1200 GSM will provide a soft cloud-like feel to your mattress. The 10 cm depth will add loft to your mattress.

I hope this helps, and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to give our small, friendly team a call on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaels
