What is the correct type of mattress to look for?
I'm 90 kg and 6 ft 1 inch, and share a double bed with a divan base with my wife. We've had a couple of mattresses that have caused me lower back pain. First a spring mattress from John Lewis and most recently a Simba mattress which we are returning. I'm looking for an alternative, a mattress that is very firm but which won't sag and which won't lead to lower back pain. I know it's a matter of taste, but what types of mattress would you advise me to consider.
Good morning Ravi,
Thank you for your question.
We have two ranges of mattresses and in each range we have a firm mattress. Choosing a mattress is about having the correct spring tension to give you support and also the upholstery layers which are on top of the springs which we call the comfort layers.
In the Origins Range which are traditional pocket sprung mattresses, we would recommend our Origins Pocket 2000 mattress which is the same as the Origins 1500 but with the firmer 2000 springs.
This mattress needs to be turned and rotated on a regular basis in order to allow the fillings to settle naturally and to ensure that you are fully utilising all areas of the mattress. This should then prevent the mattress from sagging.
At your body weight, however, we would normally have advised the Origins Pocket 1500 which would give you an overall medium feel and support.

---|---|
1 | 300gsm Wool |
2 | 750gsm Very Soft Polyester |
3 | 500gsm Polyester Pad |
4 | One Inch Foam Insulator Layer |
5 | 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs |
In our Artisan Range of mattresses, which are again traditional pocket sprung mattresses, we would recommend our Artisan Bespoke.
This mattress has 100% natural fillings and we would make the mattress with a medium spring tension.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The springs in a mattress are there to give you good support and at your body weight, the medium spring is going to give you that support. We would not put any one onto a firm spring unless they were over 17.5st / 110kg unless you do want an ultra firm mattress.
We hope the above is of assistance to you, but please feel free to telephone the Office.
King Regards Gary
