A customer asked

Hi i am looking to buy a new king size divan I have looked at the IKEA hesseng firm mattress and get a base with two-foot drawers total cost would be around £800 (as quoted in 2015) I just wanted to know your thoughts on this and also what mattress alternatives you have the IKEA hesseng has around 600 pocket spring which seems low.

Your thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Hi Amin,

Thanks for your question.

Regarding the IKEA Hesseng, it is one of IKEA's natural fibre, traditional pocket-sprung options, we know from customer feedback that this was one of their most popular models. However, as you rightly pointed out, a spring count of around 600 pocket springs in a King size is quite low. In a standard King size mattress, we typically look for a minimum of 1,000 to 1,500 pocket springs to provide proper support, weight distribution, and longevity. With a lower spring count, each individual spring has to do significantly more work, which can lead to faster wear and less tailored support across your body.

Based on your interest in latex and your search for a more robust alternative, I would suggest looking at two specific models from our range:

The published details in respect of the upholstery are vague particularly in terms of the upholstery layers by way of GSM (grams per square metre).

While the Hesseng uses natural materials like wool, silk, and latex on top, mass-produced mattresses in this price bracket often use thinner layers of fillings over synthetic sub-layers, which can settle quickly or feel firmer than expected depending on your body weight.

This lack of detail makes it very difficult to provide a direct comparison to products in our ranges. I would say that in terms of it being pocket springs with a latex layer and offering a medium/firm or firm feel in its description I would say the  following models would be quite similar in support and comfort. Origins Pocket Latex 1500 or Origins Latex Support 1500 find these products here,

1. Origins Pocket Latex 1500
This is our standard latex model within the Origins range. It features a 1500 nested pocket spring unit for medium support and 6cm of Talalay latex (a 60/40 natural-synthetic blend) for progressive comfort and pressure relief.

- Feel: It is classed as a medium feel in the top upholstery layers.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               - Construction: It uses Medium Ergosense foam provides the medium support feel.                                                                                                                                                                                                               - Suitability: It is an excellent responsive alternative to memory foam as it stays much cooler and recovers its shape instantly when you move.

2. Origins Latex Support 1500
If you prefer a slightly more substantial feel, the Support model utilizes the same 1500 spring unit but with a firmer upholstery stack.

- Feel: It provides a medium/firm comfort feel, making it slightly firmer than the original Origins Pocket Latex model.
- Construction: It uses a gel-infused latex and a firmer 25mm blue foam layer to provide more resistance.
