Which mattress is best for me?
My weight is just below 65 Kg, I had problems with my back before. Now I plan to change to a super king mattress which support my back well. Which mattress do you recommend?
Hi Jenny,
Thank you for your question. The advice used to be that anyone with back problems needs a firm mattress, but this is not the case. An orthopaedic mattress has extra firm pocket springs that will only support body weights over 20 stone (127 kg). Body weights under this do not activate the springs, which means you essentially have a tabletop of wire with upholstery layers on top. Firm upholstery layers can cause issues for side sleepers, causing pressure pains in the shoulders and hips, or they can pivot on these areas, which puts pressure on the lower spine. At your body weight, we would pair you with the medium spring tension to provide you with the correct level of support, which is essential for those who suffer from back pain.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The upholstery layers on top of the springs, also known as the comfort layers, determine how a mattress feels. When deciding on which mattress would be the most suitable for you, you need to take into consideration your sleep positions and comfort preferences. We do not recommend softer upholstery layers for front and back sleepers, as sinking into the upholstery layers too much in these positions can cause lower back and neck pain. For combination sleepers, we recommend a medium level of comfort, which is suitable for all sleep positions, ie. not too firm for side sleepers but not too soft for front and back sleepers. You could look at our most popular models, the Artisan Naturals and the Origins Pocket 1500.
Is the mattress just for yourself? For lone sleepers, we do recommend utilising the whole of the sleep surface so that the upholstery layers settle evenly. You may want to consider a zip and link mattress due to the size and weight of a super kingsize mattress, one person would find it very difficult to turn the mattress over, which is necessary for the proper care and maintenance of a new mattress.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
