Will a metal bed frame damage my mattress?

Thanks for your question and for your concerns regarding your slatted base.   I am sure I will be able to assist you in sorting this out as it must be extremely frustrating for you.

Metal bed frames with thin metal rungs or narrow tubular bars can certainly accelerate wear on a mattress. Because the metal bars create narrow pressure points with wide gaps between them, the internal fillings and springs tend to push through the gaps over time rather than being evenly supported. This can cause the feel of the mattress to deteriorate much faster, leading to that lumpy sensation you described.

To protect a new mattress and extend its lifespan on a metal rung frame, you do not necessarily need to replace the entire bedstead. We recommend placing a sheet of pegboard or thin plywood (around 3mm to 6mm thick) over the metal rungs before placing your mattress on top. This creates a flat, uniform surface, distributing your body weight evenly and preventing the mattress fillings from sinking into the gaps. Alternatively, using a thick, dense fabric mattress base pad or extra layering can help, though a solid thin board provides the best overall support. I personally would suggest that a better frame for your new mattress would be more beneficial. If you don't want to replace it then maybe consider boarding the base with MDF, Hardboard or Pegboard to create a "safer" surface.   Please see article here with explains all about this which I hope you find informative.

The answer to your second point about your Airsprung mattress is speculation as you do not provide model name and specification.  However, Airsprung as a product brand is not one that I would readily associate with top quality and so, just on that basis alone I think the model you describe has come to the end of its life.
