Will mattress feel different on slatted base?

Different bases affect the overall feel of the mattress depending on the design of the mattress. Some mattresses, usually natural fibre mattresses like our Artisan range, are designed for a pocket sprung base, and you will get the described level of comfort on this type of base. Our Origins range of mattresses is designed for a platform base, which will feel softer than described on a pocket sprung base. You can read more about the different types of bases here.

Here is how different bases affect the feel of your one-sided mattress:- Sprung Divan Base: This will soften the overall feel of the mattress by cushioning the mattress.
- Sprung Slatted Base: This will make the mattress feel slightly firmer than a sprung divan base, but the level of comfort and support described for the mattress.

If the gaps between the slats exceed 3 inches, or if the base has sprung slats, we advise boarding over the horizontal slats with a thin piece of MDF, plywood, or pegboard (which also aids ventilation). You can find detailed instructions in our Mattresses For Slats article here.

In summary, changing your base from a sprung divan to a sprung slatted base will result in a slightly firmer overall feel in the internal support of the mattress. I have an Artisan Naturals on a pocket sprung base and an Artisan Naturals on a platform base. There is very little difference in terms of comfort; however, the one on the platform base feels a little more supportive.
