TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

So confused in the search for the perfect natural fibre mattress

Lavinia asked

My husband and I are looking to buy a new bed and mattress. We’re probably going to get a wooden bedstead, so one question is, is purchasing a decent pocket sprung mattress a waste if we don’t put on the divan it’s made for?
We’re looking at pocket sprung and like the idea of natural fibres (often get too sweaty in bed), but given most beds in the shops don’t really specify the exact components, we’re dubious as to what most of them contain. I’m 5’4 and 61kg, husband is 6′ and 75kg, both side sleepers. From trying a few beds in various stores and bensons comfort station, it seems we’re more suited to a softer tension (2 or 3 on the bensons scale), otherwise we find our hips/shoulders not sinking enough… We both quick like a soft sumptuous feel on the mattress top. We quite like a few in the Relyon AIS Royal range, the mid price point ones, around 900 pounds for the 1700 Reylon Royal Sandown. Is there any comparable mattresses in your range that we should be considering around this price point? Thanks!

Hi Lavinia,

Thanks for getting in touch and providing such detail, it’s really helpful for us. We would need to know the size of mattress for your budget but we can advise on models to get you started.

Firstly there is nothing to say a quality mattress cannot be paired up with a wooden bedframe. It will, however, make the mattress feel firmer than on a sprung edge divan. We also recommend that if you are going for a slatted base you read our guidance here and board over the slats to prevent sagging, rips and snags with your new mattress.

You are right to be dubious of retailers and manufacturers such as Relyon that refuse to give the GSM of their products. Without this, you have no idea whether the Relyon Royal Edinburgh contains 1000 GSM of lambswool or a meagre 100 GSM. There is a huge difference. We have written extensively about this here. For £900 for a kingsize, there won’t be much natural fibre in the mattresses you have seen knowing the markups on those models. We would hazard a guess the natural fibres are of minimal quantity and the fact it contains ‘white fibre’ which is another term for polyester shows that this mattress isn’t 100% natural.

It is hard to advise a specific model as I’d need to know the size of mattress you would be looking for, however, we can give you a starter for ten.

We have our Origins Comfort which is our starter range super soft mattress but  because of its price point it doesn’t contain natural fibres, which we know you’re keen on.

The Artisan Luxury is our softest 100% natural fibre mattress but is out of your price range for a double or kingsize. Have a look at our Artisan Naturals in a medium tension for your weights and which has a medium feel in the top layer but you could go for a soft spring tension to soften the overall feel of it. You could always add a soft topper to further soften the top layer if preferred. Have a look in our outlet where we sell our returned mattresses at a discount if you prefer which can help keep you within budget. Both these models have vanadium coated calico encased pocket springs, the highest quality available in a spring unit.

Have a look at those models and then maybe give us a call on 0161 437 4419 for some more tailored advice around mattress sizes etc.

Kind regards Julie
