The mattress protector will need to encase the surface that your body is in direct contact with. This is to simply protect it the same way as if you were sleeping directly on the mattress.

The mattress protector is always the last item to add BEFORE your bedding, so that it acts as a bridge between the mattress covers and the mattress itself. The reason why mattress protectors are so essential is that they:

• Prevent sweat stains from marking the mattress
• Damage to the mattress from humidity or other bodily fluids
• Allow you to wash the protector to remove damage (which otherwise would be permanently stuck to the mattress
• Prevent snagging from occurring when moving the mattress as the protector acts as a barrier

How much should I spend on a mattress protector?

Mattress protectors should be treated as 'replaceable' bedding that every few years can be recycled (especially made of a natural fibre like cotton). Aim to spend around £40 on a mattress protector which will serve as a wise investment in keeping your mattress like new for far longer!

Is a mattress protector different to a mattress topper?

Yes, a mattress topper adds comfort layers to the top of your mattress (almost like a mini mattress). Whereas a mattress protector goes over the mattress AND topper providing a protective barrier against damage and nocturnal fluids.
