Mattress help for different bodyweights

Hi John/ Ryan, love your site for your honesty & commitment to providing detail!

I am 5ft & 8 St and my husband is 5ft 8″ & ranges between 15.5 and 16 st. Our current mattress ( 3 yrs. old)a pocket sprung( 1500) has sunk in places , particularly at the edges despite regular turning and over the last 12 months my husband has developed lower back pain. The last straw was the pain decreased significantly when away from home last week on a school field trip and the hostel mattress was much better!!!

Hence the change of mattress. My husband prefers a firm mattress as do I but from the information you provide I note that the ‘firmness’ decreases with an increase in weight so we are terribly miss matched on the mattress front. I’ve joked about separate beds however we could not afford ‘zip & link’ and I am a ‘heat seeker’ as I am cold and my husband is always very warm. For our price range I’ve looked at the Origins Pocket Spring ( 1500 or 2000), the Sequence Pocket Suspension and pushing the finances the latex topped Origin Pocket Latex ( but not sure about the no turn aspect but read that latex is better than ‘ memory foam‘ which my husband was keen on. I would appreciate any advice you have the time to offer. Kind regards, Tricia .

Hi Tricia.

You’ve already identified the problem – your husband!

Being twice the bodyweight as you it’s obvious that your current mattress may be okay for you but certainly not for him.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

Obviously, your budget is a main factor and with this in mind I would suggest The Origins Pocket Latex 1500, as the best one for you and your requirements.

I would also look at The Ultimate Australian Wool Fleece Topper from Soak and Sleep (not overly expensive) to add an element of cushioning for you – will also protect your mattress.

Kind Regards Gary
