Mattress sloping causing me to roll out of bed
Hi
We have paid over £2500 for a Somnus Marquis king sized with the matching Divan. We have had it 3,months and have rotated and turned it every 2 or 3 weeks but the matteress slopes down outwards from the middle to such an extent that I cannot lie flat but feel I I am lying at an angle and have on several occasions fallen out of bed. This is the second matteres we have had in 9 months and this was a replacement for the Jewel that we bought in Novenber last year. The jewel had exactly the same issues and when the Harrison Spinks specialist looked at it he said it was faulty straight away.
I suffer from a form of MS that has left me with impaired functionality from the waist down and struggle to move myself around in bed. The illness has pushed my weight up to 19 stone. The illness and weight gain happened in early 2014 prior to buying the new bed and it was very clear that I was a larger sized lady and the chap that sold us the bed was tall and overweight too, probably heavier than myself and also owned a Sombus bed (possibly a fib but who knows ). If my weight was causing the problem I would expect that my sleeping area but be sinking in as I lie on my back for most if not all night as I am not able to move easily. My husband is 14 1/2 stone and he is having similar problems. This is the most we have ever spent and we are so unhappy with it.
I am going to go back to the shop tomorrow to restart the process again of getting Somnus to investigate and we are preparing to ask them to upgrade us to two single matteress so that this should not happen again. I expect we will have to pay extra again. Turning the matteress is a horrifying prospect each time we do it. I have to help but am very weak. God knows how an elderly couple would cope. The matteress probably weighs more than me, possibly more than both of us.
Can you shed any light on why our matteress keeps doing this? I expected a very very comfortable sleeping experience and instead have walked in to a nightmare. Each time I fall out of bed I have been alone and with my disability it has taken over 30 minutes to struggle to get up and as we have dogs they think it is a game and jump all over me. I am at my wits end ???
Kind regards
Michaela Hunt
Hi Michaela,
Thanks for your question.
I am sorry to hear of your mattress issues.
There could be a number of reasons for this but it is difficult to ascertain for sure.
Without sounding rude your weight can contribute to it as the heavier sleeper is compressing the mattress more than a lighter person but I can see from your comments that you made the salesperson aware of this.
With ourselves we reinforce our Origins mattresses with butterfly clips around the edge and with our Artisan mattresses we construct using a firm spring around the outside edge; Both of these construction methods are to reinforce the sides and prevent that roll off effect. This could be another contributing factor to the roll off effect if that mattress isn't reinforced.

I think personally you are doing the right thing by getting Somnus to investigate for a fault as the mattress may have failed but similarly it could just be that you're not matched with the mattress at all. It'd be interesting to know the results of the investigation.
With ourselves we tend to market our pocket sprung mattresses as the better option as you get support from the spring and then the fillings providing a comfort layer. At your body weight you would need a Firm spring whereas your husband would need a Medium spring; This will give you both the right level of support. Our pocket sprung ranges are our Origins and Artisan. The Origins range is constructed with synthetic fibres and the Artisan with natural fillings.

From there we would need to know your preferred feel in the top layers to discuss suitability as well as if you have a preference for natural fillings that provides a cool sleep surface. Please come back to me at your earliest convenience to discuss this further.
I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419. We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
Kind Regards, Lee.
