Problems with pillowtop mattress

Charlie asked
3rd May 2013

Hi, I am looking for a mattress within my rather modest budget of £400-£500, I am 5’3 and 10 stone and my partner is 6’3 and 15 stone.. We both like the soft and cozy feel as opposed to a firmer one and I was wondering if you had any recommendations?

I am thinking a pocket sprung and then perhaps a topper. Also would you recommend a sprung edge divan as opposed to a standard slatted frame to increase the “bounce” factor?

I currently have a pocket sprung pillow top mattress (never again!) which I bought about 3 years ago.. The pillow top is now completely useless and I am craving the comfort of a much more educated choice!

Any advice would be gratefully received, thank you!

Hi Charlie.

As you have probably read for a budget like this it becomes increasingly difficult to find a mattress that will perfectly suit you both – you both have fairly different requirements.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

Soft and Cosy for this budget will equate to predominantly polyester upholstery, which when new will indeed give you this feeling.

However, it will not take too long for this to degrade, particularly if no additional mattress topper is used.

Personally I would look at our Origins Reflex to be used as a benchmark in your comparisons.

If as you say you will be utilising a topper (consider the Ultimate Fleece wool from Soak and Sleep) this combination should be perfect for you both and will not be over stretching your budget.

A sprung edge divan will most certainly be a better foundation for a pocket sprung mattress, but I certainly would not go to this extra expense if your current bedframe is still in good condition.

Kind Regards Gary
