Sagging Firm Mattress

Sid Gautam asked

Hi,
I have just bought a John Lewis ortho 1600 mattress. This was after a careful selection through mattresses as I had to return a silentnight mirapocket mattress because it was too soft.
I have had the new ortho mattress for two weeks now and already feel it is sagging from the middle which makes sleeping difficult since I am 190cm and the bed is only a double (can’t move to sleep on the edges). I was wondering where this is a mattress issue or could be an issue with my slatted bed. I have heard slatted beds offer worse support than divans – so is it possible the mattress sags because there isn’t enough support from the bed below?
Thanks for your response.

Hi Sid

Thanks for your question.

You don’t say if your mattress is turnable or not, if it is i would say give it a flip over and use the other sleep surface, and give your current side time to rest.

You also don’t mention if your slats are flat or sprung. Sprung slatted base can sometimes give people a feeling of being pushed into the centre of the bed, this can be easily rectified by placing 3-5mm boards of MDf or hardboard over the slatted area of your base, this gives a solid flat surface for the mattress, and will stop the dip in the middle, if the slats are sprung (slightly curved).
