Sealy vs Reylon Mattresses: How to compare the two?

Hi

I am deciding between the Sealy Nostromo and a Reylon Natural Supreme 2350.

We are both 55 years of age with lower back pain when on the wrong Bed.

Which of these two mattresses would you recommend the Sealy or the Relyon?

Hi Anju,

Many thanks for your question on Sealy vs Relyon mattresses. You've come to the right place for mattress comparisons. We have a tool here that lets you compare hundreds of high street mattress models next to each other.

Spring Tension: Ideally, we would need to know your heights and bodyweights to help identify the correct spring tension for you. Spring tensions are based purely on your body weight and should not be confused with the overall 'mattress feel' ie soft, medium or firm. This is the biggest mistake people make, by choosing the wrong spring tension for their bodyweight and confusing it with comfort.

Let's have a look at the Relyon first as there's a bit more detail available on that one compared to the Sealy model.

Relyon Natural Supreme Mattress: Firstly we need to have a close look at the mattress components in the Reylon model to be able to compare. To see if they lost the grams per square meter of the fibres, if not it makes it impossible to compare and know what's inside their mattress. This mattress is listed as a medium firm feel and priced at £915 for a kingsize.

  • Medium/firm support - however, there is no spring gauge or tension listed. Springs come in either  1.2 9soft, 1.4 (medium) or 1.6 (firm) spring tension which depends on your bodyweight. Most people fall into the 1.4 medium spring tension if they are between 9-16 stone.
  • 2350 pocket springs - This indicates its a dual layer of synthetic encased pocket springs. Dual layers give the mattress a more lively 'bouncier' feel than a single layer. The spring number in a mattress can be misleading as its the type and tension that is most important rather than the number (watch our guide below for a more detailed explanation).
  • Wool - there is no GSM or blend mentioned so we have no idea how this will feel based on the limited description.
  • Mattress depth 34cm - this is because it uses a pillowtop making it a one-sided mattress. You may want to read more on why we refuse to make pillowtop mattresses due to their drawbacks here.
  • One sided - meaning you can only ever use one side. It also has the disadvantage of shortening the mattresses life span as you're only ever able to use one side of the fillings.

Sealy Nostromo Mattress: This is a pocket sprung pillow top mattress with a layer of 'innergetic latex'' (which is a synthetic man made latex not natural) and is listed as a medium feel. Priced at £1300 for a kingsize.

  • 1400 multi-zoned pocket springs for responsive support - This is a single layer of pocket springs, probably synthetic coated but again no tension or gauge given so impossible to know if its the right tension for you and your partner.
  • Luxury pillow top for enhanced comfort - again check out the drawbacks of this method. You're better with a separate removable topper.
  • Featuring a 2.5cm layer of Innergetic Latex for natural comfort and pressure relief - There's no detail given to the density or type of latex which will dictate how it feels and behaves. This layer is practically useless given that fibres can compress up to 2cm in any upholstery. Ideally, any foam or latex needs to be at least 5cm to have any purpose. You can read more on why you need to know the blend and density of the latex you're looking at here. There's also no reference to the other fillings inside the mattress. It can't just be a spring unit and then 2.5cm of latex or it would be incredibly uncomfortable!
  • Silky-soft Tencel cover finish - temperature regulating and anti-microbial for a fresher night's sleep - This is a synthetic polyester cover.
  • Medium firmness rating for the perfect balance of comfort and support - This feel is provided by the upholstery alone we assume given no spring tension is provided.

Back pain and mattresses: If you're suffering from back pain then the right mattress is essential for a good nights sleep. People used to think an extra firm mattress would help with a bad back but this advice is incorrect. You need a mattress with the correct spring tension ie support for your body weight and then enough upholstery to help provide comfort during the night. If you're a side sleeper you will need slightly softer upholstery when compared to a back or front sleeper for example.
