The best luxury mattress you can buy

Wondering what the worlds most luxurious and expensive beds are? Well, you’re in luck, this article will show you what top of range luxury mattresses are available from only the very best mattress manufacturers. It presents some of the most high-end upholstery, support units and mattress detailing. If you’re looking for a luxury mattress, this is the list to follow! Let's take a look at the world's most exquisite expensive beds!

If money is no object then the world’s finest mattress will be high on your list of must-haves. You can literally count the Worlds best mattresses on one hand and for good reason. To create such perfection takes careful precision in sourcing the best fibres, handcrafting the support or spring unit along with hours if not days of painstaking manufacturing detail. Weeks if not months of time are spent creating every single one of these mattress models all by hand.

It is also interesting to see what characteristics are used to produce such sublime pieces of art but also take note of the similarities of the level and amount of components used to deem these models as the ‘ultimate’ mattress. It also puts into perspective any conceivable answer to the much-asked question what’s the best mattress I can buy? So obviously, this question should be followed up with the tagline for my budget!

The Worlds Finest Mattresses 2020

Here’s our list of the worlds top luxury mattresses:

Note: The details below are the best available to hand but may contain slight specification and pricing errors. Image copyright is attributed to the appropriate company.

Savoir Royal State

This is The Royal State which is the ultimate in sleep luxury. Only sixty will be made to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queens Coronation.

This is the industry benchmark for Bespoke bed design and manufacture and will set you back a cool £115,000 or thereabouts. It’s worth noting that Savoir Beds is deemed to be the ultimate bed manufacturer in this country, commands enviable respect throughout the industry as well as throughout the design community.

The specification of this model is also worth taking note of. It puts completely into perspective what it takes to produce the ultimate bed and ignoring the retail price for the time being, and examining what components and techniques have been used to produce this outstanding model should help you in understanding the methods of the craftsman.

Just taking the build of the mattress itself into account we see that the spring support comes from just one layer of 10 turn, hand tied pocket springs (although no figure of spring count is actually given we can surmise it will be in the region of 1800 or so upholstery is hand laid, long loose horsetail, carded virgin lambswool, carded cashmere wool and cotton)

An interesting point to note is that the core mattress (above) is supplemented with double toppers.  The validity and importance of this usage should be seen as intrinsic to the overall design: Read here about toppers and usage

The Royal under topper (directly on top of the mattress) consists of a core of long, loose, hand-teased horsetail and a soft lambswool outer layer. The secondary Royal topper contains hand-teased, curled horsetail, in two layers, with lambswool divide. Contained with a luxurious outer layer of pure carded cashmere. Fabulous!

It is obvious that in order to go into detail about all the aspects of build for the complete model is completely inappropriate for us to do. This is pure craftsmanship at the highest level and I am completely green with envy.

Vi-spring for Harrods

This is an exclusive model to Harrods from the acknowledged company who actually invented the pocket sprung unit back in 1901 (James Marshall – U.S Patent No: 698,529). Priced at around £52,000 this 7’0 x 7’0 absolute delight is another model I would love to go to sleep on.

Made entirely by hand and utilising 6240 hand-nested calico encased springs in three layers. The actual mattress is upholstered with 200 GSM of pure silk, then 200 GSM of cashmere, followed by 900 GSM of blended Shetland wool and cotton and 1200 GSM of hand-opened and hand-teased long-stranded European horsetail enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover.  Overlaid with 900 gsm of blended real Shetland wool and cotton.

This particular mattress is partnered with the President divan base. Along with the Imperial divan base (specification below) is considered to be amongst the ultimate in construction with 3196 calico-pocketed springs in a two-layer construction. The two layer spring unit is mounted on a screwed and glued beech timber frame.  The divan frame is covered with insulating wadding, and the ticking case is calico lined. 1200 GSM Horsehair enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover and then overlaid with a 1200 GSM blended platinum certified British fleece wool and cotton this is considerably more upholstery used in the base than many so-called high-end mattresses have to offer.

The Vi Spring Royal State (Below) is the world’s most expensive mattress

The Vi Spring for Harrods commands a hefty price tag and unusual design

Kluft & Co Palais Royale

American based but majority owned (51%) by Vi-Spring. This is an interesting construction, going slightly against the grain of gradual support theories – but it does come from the States, and doubtful if available in this country.

This is the Palais Royale, not even the top of the range offering at around £22,000. The top of range moniker goes to their Beyond Luxury Sublime model at £28,000. The striking thing to note about these two models is the unexpected usage of foams and latex. There should be such a prolific use of natural fibre you should hear it bleat and neigh every so often. Still, that’s the Americans for you. [See here for dissection]

Vi-Spring Diamond Jubilee Limited Edition

Only ever available in Hong Kong (I think), and only eight were manufactured at a price of around £85,000. This is the Vi-Spring Diamond Jubilee limited edition and can easily be classed as one of the ultimate beds in existence.

The mattress is upholstered with 300 GSM blended British fleece wool, then 1200 GSM hand-opened and hand-teased long-stranded horsetail.  Overlaid with a blend of 610 GSM hand-teased platinum certified Shetland wool, 300 GSM of silk and 200 GSM of vicuña all covered with hair proof cotton cambric and topped off with another 300 GSM of British fleece wool.

This is partnered with The Imperial divan base. Constructed with two layers of springs. The upper layer consists of 1410 (KS) hand-nested calico-pocketed springs. The spring unit is mounted on a screwed and glued solid timber frame. The divan frame is covered with insulating wadding, and the ticking case is calico lined for added protection. Divan upholstery consists of 1200 GSM horsehair overlaid with 1200 GSM blended platinum certified British fleece wool and cotton.

This is the only model that we have heard of that utilises Vicuña as an upholstery component. Pure and unadulterated luxury for those that can afford it. Again we are really envious!

Hastens The Vividus

The top of the range model from this renowned Swedish manufacturer is The Vividus. Truly described as completely hand built. It consists of just four ‘ingredients’ being horsehair, cotton, flax and wool. What makes this particular model interesting to us is how the internal components are utilised

This has a retail price of around £40,000 a slightly cheaper alternative is the next model down, the Hastens 2000T II, much more affordable at £21,000 or so.

Savoir Number One

The Savoir Number One is the top of range model (excluding special editions) from the absolute leading and unattested mattress manufacturer in this country. Priced at around £45,000 (King size).

This is the bed found in the Royal Suite at London’s Savoy hotel and is a testament to the 120 man hours of labour used to produce such an impressive piece of sublime and unadulterated luxury. The intrinsic use of a separate, removable, replaceable topper signifies the absolute importance of such an item. Not just on this model, but we believe should be on every single mattress your budget allows.

The upholstery used in this model is a carefully judged mix of loose long horsehair cotton and wool. The topper is constructed using hand-teased, curled horse tail, in two layers with lambs wool divide and an outer layer of pure cashmere.

Vi-spring The Magnificence

The Magnificence is listed as the top of range core model in the UK and carries a retail price of around £13,000 (mattress only), although in the United States similarly constructed models such as the Masterpiece Superb partnered with the Statesman divan, are also within this realm of construction.

The mattress upholstery consists of 900 GSM blended real Shetland Isle fleece wool and cotton, then 610 GSM hand-opened and hand-teased long-stranded horsetail enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover. Layered with 200 GSM cashmere, 200 GSM mohair and 600 GSM hand-teased real Shetland Isle fleece wool, overlaid with 1200 GSM blended real Shetland Isle fleece wool and cotton.

The combined upholstery weight of this particular mattress is in the region of 3700 GSM. A good indication of what level of upholstery is considered to be substantial enough to take the podium to the top of the range.

John Ryan By Design The Legacy

After 13 long years we have finally been able to create the worlds first in mattress construction and craftsmanship. The John Ryan Legacy; The Worlds Finest Mattress

The Legacy contains three elements;

  1. Naturally upholstered sprung edge base
  2. Mattress Base Pad
  3. British Upholstery Mattress

We have created our first mattress base pad which sits in our recessed 100% naturally upholstered sprung edge base. Giving the ultimate in progressive support and comfort. This is then topped with the extra deep top mattress which has both a firm or softer side providing ultimate choice.

4 Rows of Genuine Hand Side Stitching and 10,000 GSM of 100% Natural Fibres in the Mattress layer alone.

The Legacy can be configured in 4 different tension preferences with the dual-sided layers. Meaning that if a sleeper needs a slightly firmer surface from one month to the next, maybe after a long flight back off holiday or business, the mattress can accommodate this.
