A customer asked

I'm bamboozled by mattresses!

I'm currently surviving on less than four hours sleep which won't help my mental acuity, so I need some help, please :) I'm 5'7" and weigh 9.5st, and I need a 4ft (small double) mattress. I've always been a side sleeper but my lack of sleep at the moment is due to being so uncomfortable lying on my side on my current memory foam mattress - sore hips, sore knees etc, I know I just turned 40 but come on.... After wading through Google and reading through some of your articles, I'm kind of thinking I shouldn't go for a pocket sprung mattress, and probably latex would be divine but out of my price range. Which leads me back to memory foam which at the moment I consider Spawn of Satan. I don't have a problem with being too hot on the one I've got, just too bloody uncomfortable. What do you guys think my best options are?

Hi Claire,

Bamboozeled is a good word when it comes to mattress shops and sales tactics!

I'll see if I can unboozel you with some straight forward advice around memory foam etc.

I could do with knowing exactly what kind of mattress you have at the moment to really assist but I'll advise with some assumptions.

Memory foam is a fantastic product for its price point and purpose, ie pressure relieving.

The issue is usually it gets hot, can lead to people feeling like they're sleeping in quicksand.

You're right that Latex would be ideal for pressure relief and support, it simply can't be beaten in terms of quality for this style of pressure relieving mattress.

High quality pocket sprung beds are fantastic for giving support and comfort utilising both sides of the mattress, unlike standard memory foam offerings, that said for some people its the progressive pressure relief that a pocket sprung mattress can sometimes struggle with when compared to latex and memory foam.

It really is a balance of the benefits and drawbacks of each style and whats more important to you.

Have you considered a hybrid mattress?

One that combines pocket springs with a hybrid foam layer?

This can give you the best of both worlds, consistent support from pocket springs but with the responsivity and pressure relief of a hybrid foam.

Hybrid foam responds much faster than memory foam removing the quicksand feel and returns to its original position far quicker allowing you to move and reposition yourself in your mattress without struggling to excavate yourself from a memory foam hole!

If you have further questions please call the office.

Hope that helps!

Kind Regards Gary
