Tufted mattress

Hello,
2 years ago I bought a new mattress as I was suffering with back pain. (Hip and spine arthritis) The mattress is Westminster Kensington 1500 Pocket and Latex Mattress-Double (4'6). Initially it seemed to be of benefit but in recent months not so. The mattress is tufted and it seems that if my buttocks fall in to the dip of the tufting it causes the pelvis to move unfavourably. If I make a point of sleeping in a way to avoid the dips it makes enormous difference.
Is it possible to release the tufted parts and or would you have a topper that might rectify the unevenness.
My weight is iro. 13.5 stone
Thanks for an excellent informative website which I wish I had seen 2 years ago.

Hi Barry,

Thank you for your question.

I have viewed the details of the product you refer to and note that it is described as a firm mattress. Previous advice for people suffering with back and neck issues was that they ought to look for a firm mattress. However, in recent times that advice has been reversed in that what is required is support from a spring unit and comfort provided by the upholstery layers. With your body weight I would be reluctant to put you on a firm mattress, as you fall into the medium spring/weight bracket

The purpose of the tufting is to make sure that the internal components (layers) do not move around and there is no way of releasing the tufts so that the mattress will have a flat top surface for you to sleep on. The application of a topper, unless it is a solid layer, will not prevent you from feeling the tufts, although it may provide some temporary relief.

We make a pocket sprung latex mattress (Origins Pocket Latex 1500) and this is a one sided mattress without any tufting and currently retails at £820.00 for a double, although the lack of tufting on this product does not mean the layers will move around due to the it containing Talalay Latex rather than layers of different fillings which need to be held in place.

John Ryan By Design Origins Latex
1 300 gsm Wool Silk blend pad
2 3cm Talalay Latex (60/40% blend) 70kg Density
3 3cm Talalay Latex (60/40% blend) 70kg Density

5 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

I trust that this is of assistance to you but please do not hesitate to contact the office for further information / advice on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
