Buying a new mattress

Mark Murphy

I asked a couple of questions in June and want some more advice before I buy.
I currently have an mattress similar to the Tempur which is now about 12 years old
I am looking for a king size mattress only which I believe should be medium firmness (I sleep alone).
I am 6 feet tall and weigh about twelve and a half stone and mostly a side sleeper.
I don't know if I need 1000, 1500 or 2000 springs but am presuming 2000 would make the mattress too firm.
I know I should probably try out mattresses in shops first but feel that 5 minutes wouldn't really tell me anything.
From the reviews I have read, your mattress scores quite high.
I also note that if the mattress really doesn't work for me then I can return it.
My last concern is whether the mattress will go up my stairs.
My current mattress went up the stairs OK but then its maybe 8 inches whereas yours is more like 13 inches thick.
Plus my current mattress has some flex in it to manoeuvre when needed to get up the stairs.
How do we know whether if I ordered a mattress from you it would indeed get up my stairs..?? Do I need to send you pictures or take measurements to help you advise whether it would go up my stairs?
I would like to hear which mattress you think I need and views about getting it up my stairs.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Mark Murphy

Hi Mark,

Origins Pocket 1500

Thank you for your questions.  It is impossible for me to see what advice you were given in June so I can only go on what you have written here.  When you said about spring counts I am assuming you are referring to our Origins range?  Those spring counts are in different models that have different upholstery ( comfort layers).  The Origins Comfort 1000 is the softest upholstery in the range whereas the Origins Pocket 1500 is a medium in the comfort layers, which means it has a slight sink in but not too much.  The 2000 spring count is the Origins Pocket 1500 but with 2000 spring for people over 17 stone.  The spring tension of all the Origins mattresses is medium which is the ideal spring tension to give you the correct support.  The comfort layers are personal preference on how you would like the bed to feel.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Trying a mattress in a showroom may give you an idea of what you are looking for if you know how long it has been there and how many people of varying body weights have already softened it first.  This will tell you how your mattress will feel in a few months or years.  You are correct that 5 mins on a mattress will not be as informative as sleeping on it for at least a couple of weeks.  If you purchase a mattress online from us and are unhappy with it, for any reason, we have the '60 day love it or return it' guarantee.

The depth of our Origins range is 13 inches (32.5 cm) and a king size is 5 foot (152 cm) by 6 foot 6 inches (198).  Due to the density of the fibres used in the construction of these mattresses they do not bend.  Do you have the clearance on your stairs for this size mattress?  Do you have a lot of 90-degree angles which the mattress would have to turn through to get it to the room of your choice?  One of the main reasons mattresses are returned to us it that they simply could not get into the property.  If you feel this may be an issue you may want to consider the zip and link option ( where the mattress is produced in two sections and zipped together).

If this is not a route you want to go down, another option would be a foam based mattress similar to your current mattress.  Our Hybrid range is comparable to some of the Tempur range.  I would recommend you look at the Hybrid 4 which has medium support in the core mattress and a softer topper for that sink in feel.  Both sections are fully turnable and the added benefit of this is that the topper can be changed when it is no longer responsive, cheaper than replacing the whole mattress.
