New Mattress Advice and Recommendation Please

Hello,
I am 5ft 4in and weigh just under 9st. Although I'm one month pregnant!. My husband is 5ft 10in and weighs. Our current mattress is only about five years old, you can't flip it over as it has a foam layer at the top from what I recall. I think it's med-firm but I'm not sure. I sleep on my side. Husband sleeps on side or back. I have dreadful shoulder pain. I'm also concerned about exposure to chemicals from memory foam? We're looking to get a king or even super king. The extra king (slightly shorter length?) would be perfect for our room but would it be hard to find a bed and bedding that matches?
I look forward to your advice! Thank you.

Hi Lucy,

Thank you for your enquiry and congratulations on your new baby.  From what you have said it would appear that your current mattress is too firm in the upholstery layers causing you pressure pains in your shoulders.  We wouldn't recommend anything too firm in the comfort layers for side sleepers for this reason.

In terms of Chemicals Memory foam is completely synthetic. If you want a more Natural mattress then you would need to look at our Artisan or Latex ranges. Our entire Artisan Mattress range now features a Chemical-Free FR application. By using Biobased ingredients for the treatment compound. Resulting in a plant-based fire retardancy finish which is completely compliant with the regulations.

Memory foam requires body heat to be able to mould to your body and it retains this heat making some people very hot.  Over time it also loses its ability to return to its original shape and on a one-sided mattress once this happens there is no way to prolong the lifespan of the mattress as the underside is not meant for sleeping on.

At your body weight, you are borderline between the soft and medium spring tensions, which means you would get support from either but I personally would recommend you go for the medium spring tension ( for that extra support while pregnant).  You don't give your husband's body weight so I don't know what spring tension he would require.  If he does require a different spring tension to yourself we can do a dual spring tension or zip and link mattresses in king size and above.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We have two pocket spring ranges, the Origins range is made with man-made fibres and the Artisan range is made with predominately natural fibres.  As your husband sleeps on his back as well as his side I would recommend you look at something that is medium in the comfort layers.  The medium in the Origins range is the Origins Pocket 1500 which with its medium spring tension gives a good all-round medium feel.  The true medium of the Artisan range is the Artisan Naturals which is 85% natural fibres and can have the springs selected to suit.

If you would like to go for the Extra King size, I have found fitted sheets 180 cm x 190 cm available on Amazon. For duvets and covers, the Super King size would suffice, an extra 3 inches at the foot end.

I hope this helps if you would like to discuss the suitability of any of our mattresses please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
