Zip and link with different tensions for sciatica sufferers

Hello,

Your website has been an absolute godsend - I know very little about mattresses and flopping about in three different showrooms did nothing to change this!

I am scheduled to have spinal surgery for sciatica in a few months for sciatica and currently have a 15-year-old Dunlopillo king size zip and link memory foam mattress, which has developed a bit of a dip on both sides now. My husband prefers mattresses with a medium firmness (as did I!) but I have been advised to get a firm or very firm mattress with a comfort layer to help keep my back in shape post-surgery.

Is it possible to get a zip and link memory foam mattress with split tension? The Origins 1500 looks lovely but we would prefer memory foam or hybrid mattress.

Thank you!

Best wishes,

Frances

Hi Frances

Thanks for your question,

Thanks for your kind words about John Ryan, it’s much appreciated!

At that age, I would expect the mattress to show the signs of wear you have advised.

At John Ryan By Design we do not sell any memory foam, this is due to the many pitfalls associated with it.

As you have been advised to go for firm support, this would suggest that the only suitable mattress would be the Origins Pocket Latex 1500. This is the firmest support level with a latex comfort layer. This is available in a king size zip and link.

I must advise you that, With regard to the recommendation to opt for an orthopaedic or firm mattress is concerned, we would comment that it used to be common practice to advise people with back problems to go for this type of mattress. However, of late, such advice is being contradicted by organisations such as the Institute of Chiropractors, in fact, what you need is the right spring tension to provide the correct support for your body weight(s) and then the correct upholstery to provide you with the level of comfort required.

I hope this helps if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to call the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
