Indentation in my Topper

My wife and I bought a mattress with a topper attached to it from Dreams 8 month ago and it has indentations on both sides 4cm deep and we turn the mattress monthly as advised. We went to the shop and they arranged for customer services to get a technician to inspect the bed. He put a string across the mattress, laid on the bed, pressed it down a few times and sad there was nothing wrong with it, asked if he would sleep on it he said no. Dreams have said they will not repair, replace the mattress or reimbursement. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for your question.

Unfortunately Ken this is a question that we do get asked quite a lot.  The Pillowtop can be comprised of anything from polyestermemory foamlatexwool etc. This is usually a super soft layer to give that immediate sink feeling to the mattress. A good comparison is a feather or down topper which immediately sinks and lets you snuggle into the topper.  The problem with a pillowtop is that because the mattress can only be rotated round, indentations soon appear and once this happens, the only alternative is to replace the whole mattress even through the support will be fine.

We would always recommend a mattress that you can turn and rotate on a regular basis as this allows the fillings to settle evenly and the whole of the sleep surface to be utilised.

However, if you solely sleep on the same side each night, indentations will occur as the middle of the mattress is not being utilised.  Some customers, particularly with superking size have noted that a ridge can appear in the middle of the bed and are concerned this means the bed is sagging. This is where the centre of the bed receives little to no use so keeps its uncompressed state, whilst the two other sides compress slightly. Human nature means we are creatures of habit and tend to sleep in the same position every night meaning this area gets more wear and compression than the rest. It doesn’t mean the mattress has sagged or dipped as in failed, it is just natural when you have two people using the same parts night on night. It is more of an aesthetic problem and not construction failure.
