I am looking for a new mattress and almost settled on the Hypnos Origin Wool 10 when my son in law recommended you. What is your comparable mattress and how does it compare to the Hypnos Origin Many thanks Penny

Hi Penny,

Many thanks for your question asking about the Hypnos Origin Wool 10 mattress. It usually retails at around £2000 for a kingsize but we've found it discounted to £1195. We will talk a bit more later on about why you should be dubious of such large mark downs on any mattress.

The Hypnos Origin 10 is a natural fibre wool based mattress featuring synthetic spun bond pocket springs. It's a very soft feel mattress given the high wool content and lack of firmer supporting fibres. So perfect if you're looking for a very soft mattress.

Let's have a look at the product description to offer comparisons and a review of this mattress given its £1195-£2000 price tag.
Hypnos Origins 10 Mattress Specifications:

  • This luxury seasonal turn mattress features a ReActivePro™ 10-turn pocket spring system with Triple Edge Protection™. Each spring independently senses your shape and weight distribution, providing support and total spinal and body support.
  • Upholstered with 7 fleeces of 100% British wool traceable to Red Tractor assured farms and covered with a naturally safe and fire-resistant sleep surface made from sustainably sourced cotton.
  • Tailored with 3 rows of genuine hand side stitching for additional edge-to-edge support, and hand tufted for long lasting comfort and support.
  • An extra layer of breathable natural Talalay latex for a luxurious feel

Hypnos Spring Support

Let's look at those ReActive springs as a starting point. When choosing a mattress many people get the very basic step of choosing the correct pocket spring tension wrong. Meaning no matter what you do you'll never be fully comfortable on the mattress.

When choosing a pocket spring its essential you choose the tension (often listed incorrectly as a 'firmness') for your bodyweight. You can find out more below but you should always choose the spring tension that correlates to your bodyweight. Not how you want the mattress to ultimately feel. That's created by the upholstery layers placed on top.

Sadly Hypnos doesn't provide the gauge or tension of the springs so there is no way to know other than looking at the tensions if these are suitable. Usually, the spring tension or gauge matches up to our table below.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

As a rule of thumb spunbond pocket springs, like the Hypnos ReActive ones are fine in a mid-range mattress but if you're wanting the very best in breathable durable springs then a calico vanadium coated pocket spring is always advisable if your budget allows. They last far longer and are more progressive.

Hypnos Upholstery Layers:

Sadly Hypnos doesn't give you the actual GSM of the wool layers in this mattress. Whilst it's interesting to know how many fleeces they use, it doesn't help you compare to other high-quality mattress manufactures. Like Vispring, Savoir or us. To be able to do this you need to know the GSM of each of the fibre layers.

Wool is one of the softest natural fibres which is incredibly breathable but does have very high loft and therefore settlement. This is why wool is usually paired up with a more supportive fibre to keep this loft and reduce natural settlement. Hypnos has added a layer of Talalay (again depth, density and firmness unknown) somewhere in this mattress. Probably to act as a bridging layer between the spring unit and the wool layers. There is nothing wrong with a primary wool mattress, but we prefer to use some additional support layers like horsehair to enable them to stay consistently comfortable for longer.
Hypnos Mattress Detailing:

It's nice to see finer details in this mattress such as 3 row of hand side stitching. This is a far more skilful and labour intensive process than machine side stitching. You can read far more on why we hand side stitch our entire Artisan mattress range to help increase edge support and provide mattress resilience.

The fact its a seasonal turn leads us to believe that the latex is only on one side making one sider firmer and slightly warmer for winter and the other side is just wool, making it cooler and softer for summer. Without details from Hypnos this is an assumption but usually true of seasonal turn mattresses. However, you should always turn your mattress monthly to ensure even settlement of natural fibres.

Sales and Discount Mattress Pricing Explained:

At this time of yer, there are plenty of discount sales, coupons and offers. It can make mattress buying very confusing as you look for the best bargain without really understanding what's inside the mattresses. We've written extensively here about murky retail pricing practices which may interest and alarm you.

The summary is that you need to ask what the true value is of a mattress, including mark ups to see whether than original RRP was ever accurate or simply put there ready to be drastically discounted. The best way is to know what's exactly in the mattress and then compare to other models. Marketing, TV adverts, endorsements and retail showrooms all add on significant costs to mattresses. Which is why we can offer our hand made range so competitively.

We're not for one minute saying all mattress manufacturers or retailers actively disguise the true price, but bear it in mind when shopping.
