Best mattress for Asthma sufferers?

H.M?

Hi,

I was hoping you could help me find the best mattress for people who suffer from Asthma or allergies.
(I was initially thinking the Artisan 1500 or Artisan naturals might be ideal for our needs but then I remembered the asthma and maybe the natural materials encourage dust mites - I’m not really sure, would you know at all?).

Thank you for your time.

Hi H.M,

Many thanks for your question about mattresses for asthma sufferers. It's a really good question and we get a lot of questions about the best beds for people who suffer from asthma.

The main issue that allergies or asthma sufferers have to deal with is the build-up of dust or other allergens in their mattress. This then sets off a chain of events of a reaction whether that's itchy skin or breathing difficulties with asthma.
The key to choosing a mattress if you suffer from allergies is knowing exactly what is inside any mattress you are considering buying. The good news is that if you're reading this on our site you know that we disclose absolutely everything that goes into our mattresses.

For example, if you were allergic to horsehair you would know to avoid any of our Artisan mattresses that contain horsehair and the same for latex. No matter how well you protect a mattress with sheets and zip on covers, if you know you are allergic to a fibre then you should certainly avoid it.

With asthma, dust can be a big issue when it comes to breathing difficulties. The best approach with choosing a mattress for asthma is to identify a breathable mattress, ie one that contains natural fibre. These mattresses allow greater circulation of airflow and can reduce the build-up of heat, humidity in the bed and allow you to air the mattress far more effectively than say a solid foam or synthetic mattress. It maybe good to read our mattress maintenance guide here for more information on reducing allergens in bed.

Dust Mites in Mattresses:

The fact is that most mattresses after they are used will end up with some level of dust mites. They are a part of life even with the most rigorous cleaning regime. Even a completely synthetic 'hypoallergenic' mattress is prone to dust mites as they live off dead skin and debris.

The key here is the weekly maintenance of your mattress. Vacuuming around the bed and changing the sheets weekly can drastically reduce dust mites. Using a mattress protector can isolate them to that top layer of the bed, each week you can wash this on a 60-degree wash to help remove them.

A natural fibre mattress is no more prone to dust mites, they are feeding on dead skin and organic matter remember.  The beauty of a natural fibre mattress is that they are much more resilient for turning and keeping their high loft. Other cheaper synthetic mattresses are only one-sided meaning you can't turn them which reduces their lifespan and also concentrates all wear on one side. Furthermore, the more you move and rotate them to faster they degrade or the covers usually bobble.

The best approach for asthma is weekly maintenance and turning your mattress.

Best Mattresses for Asthma sufferers:

Either the Artisan 1500 mattress which has a firmer feel in the upholstery or the Artisan Naturals a more medium feel in the top comfort layers would be fine. Really the decision should be based on the overall comfort feel you're going for. Both these models allow you to pick the spring tensions which should always be chosen by your bodyweight, the comfort or upholstery layers then allow you to choose the 'overall feel' ie soft, medium or firm preference of the mattress.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus
