A customer asked

We currently have a pocket sprung mattress with a topper attached (pillowtop mattress I believe?)

Bought 5 years ago which has given both me and my husband backache, I have shoulder and hip pain in the night causing me sleepless nights and waking up like I have been run over.

I am 10:11 and 5/8 my husband is 14 stone and 6 ft .

We are both side sleepers.

What mattress would you advise, please?

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your enquiry.

It appears that you have come across the major pitfall associated with pillow top mattresses, which is why we would not recommend such products. Although you have provided your body weights and height, which will enable us to confirm the spring tension/feel that would be most appropriate, you have not indicated a budget, which makes giving a specific recommendation difficult.

Having said that, we would confirm that you ought to be looking at a medium tension/feel and we would suggest that you to view the two best selling products from our pocket sprung ranges as detailed at the foot of this response.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The Artisan Naturals has natural upholstery and can have the spring tension selected as medium, whilst the Origins Pocket 1500 has a fixed spring tension with synthetic upholstery giving and overall medium feel. As side sleepers, both these mattresses will provide the support you require.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+ A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
