I wonder please if you could advise whether it is ok to place a coil mattress on top of a pocket sprung (sprung edged) divan base with draws (std. double size). The base is 16yrs old.

Good Morning Jane,

Thank you for your question. https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/understanding-beds/mattress-bases-explained/

At 15 stone we would match you both to a Medium spring tension; The spring is what gives support from inside the mattress itself.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Our Artisan range is constructed from natural fibres and materials and as such come in feeling generally cooler overall. If heat is an issue then this is the range to look at.

Given that you advise you prefer a medium feel I would guide you to our Artisan Naturals model. This model is constructed from 85% natural fibres and is the true medium feeling mattress in it's comfort layers; I.e, not too soft nor too firm. The comfort layers are the top layers that you sleep on top of on top of the springs.

Alternatively you could also look at our Artisan Bespoke 004; This is overall a medium feel in that top layer but is slightly softer than the Naturals. This model also has the benefit of being constructed from 100% natural fibres so will feel ever so slightly cooler as well.

If you do have a mattress that is too firm in the top layers then it will certainly cause and exacerbate any existing pains.

This mattress is absolutely fine to go on to a slatted base; We just advise that a solid base will firm up the overall feel of the mattress.

I hope that this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries then please don't hesitate to contact me on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.

Hi Muriel,

Thank you for your enquiry.  Pocket sprung bases are suitable for most mattresses, with the exception of foam based mattresses as they require a uniform surface such as a platform divan. A pocket sprung base will soften the overall feel of your mattress. The age of your base shouldn't be a hindrance to a new mattress, if there is nothing wrong with your base then there is no need to replace it at the same time as your mattress.

When looking to replace your mattress you should first consider your body weight. This will determine the right spring tension to give you the correct level of support. The next this to consider is your comfort preferences and sleeping habits. We wouldn't recommend anything too firm in the upholstery layers for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pain in the shoulders hips and knees. The next thing you should consider is your budget.

I hope this was helpful and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss the suitability of any of our mattresses please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
