Replacing our bed
Hi, after 13 years on a Relyon Connoisseur 2870 (firm) pocket sprung bed its time for us to change. The current mattress is a super king on a spring base.
I'm 5'10 and 13st and my wife is 5'6 and around 9st.
We have been looking at Somnus and John Lewis Natural collection. We were put off the Somnus beds as the top of the range Zenith, which we liked the feel of in firm, actually looked liked it was already sagging at the middle on one side in the showroom.
We liked the feel of The JL Natural British Fleece Wool 7000 in medium too.
Our preference would be for a rotate rather than a turn over mattress (all though this would be weight dependant) as we both suffer from bad backs.
Not sure if we would need to replace the base as well as the mattress appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.
Thanks
Dave
Good Afternoon dathers,
Thank you for your question.
At the body weights provided, we would match you both with a medium spring tension; The spring tension is determined solely by body weight and needs to be correct to give you the right level of support from inside the mattress itself.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
With the showroom mattress sagging as you mention this could be due to the fact that the mattress might have been that for a long time and tested by many different people meaning that the fibres inside have completely compressed and sagged.
It is worth bearing in mind that a sprung base will soften down the feel of any mattress placed on top of it. There is nothing to say that you need to replace your existing bed base unless there is any sort of damage. Similarly, a solid top base will always firm up the feel of the mattress on top of it.
We have nothing to compare with John Lewis in any of our ranges. However, our Artisan range is constructed using natural fibres and materials. These materials provide a cool sleeping surface as well as generally feeling softer than other pocket sprung ranges. With mattresses, you have the option of a soft sink in sensation, a medium feel with a little sink or a firm feel with no sink. In order to discuss the suitability of our range, we would need to know how you prefer that top upholstery to feel.
All models in the Artisan range are fully turnable mattresses and as part of correct care and maintenance, we always advise flipping the mattress once a month in the first year, dropping to every 3-4 months in the second year onwards. This instantly increases the lifespan. If flipping mattresses is an issue then I would maybe consider a Zip and Link mattress as these are 2 independent "smaller" mattresses that can be zipped together or used apart. This would mean that there is less weight in each individual unit meaning they would be easier to lift and flip.
I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact me on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards, Lee.
