Vi Spring mattress is too soft, recommendation for our bedstead?

Hi - were looking to replace a king size 12 year old Vispring “traditional bedstead” mattress (JL special, and not made any more) that is too soft - it is medium springing, but felt soft from day 1. We also have the same mattress, except not a JL special version, on a double bed, and that feels much firmer and more supportive - there’s more difference than I think could be accounted for simply by the increase size between the double and the king. . Both beds are good quality sprung slat bedsteads.
I weigh 14.5 stone and 5’10”, my wife is 10 stone and 5’7” From researching your website, I assume we would want medium springing, but a firm feel - would we notice much difference between the Artisan Naturals and the artisan bespoke in firmness? Most of the medium mattresses we have tried in shops feel too “springy”. We sleep on our side / back - my wife sleeps well, I have back and neck aches and pains.
We also had a question on our bedstead - the central support bar is higher (by about an inch ) then each the side, so therefore the sprung slats are higher down the middle of the bed - is this ok for your mattresses ? I assume it may be designed like that to prevent a dip down the middle ?
Thanks for any help you can give

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your enquiry.  The Vi-Spring Traditional Bedstead mattress that you have in a king size which is exclusively a John Lewis mattress has soft upholstery layers and while your double may be of similar construction it would not be the same. The aches and pains you are experiencing in your back and neck could be from either incorrect spring tension or too soft comfort layers. We would pair you both with a medium spring tension to give you both the correct level of support for your bodyweights.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We would not recommend anything too firm in the upholstery layers for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees.  When you have tried mattresses in showrooms what type of base were they displayed on? Vi-Spring models are usually displayed on a pocket sprung base and this softens the overall feel of a mattress and may be the reason for the 'springy' feel. Another explanation may be that the beds have been on display for some time and may potential customers of varying bodyweights have already softened the comfort layers. You would notice a difference in the upholstery of the Artisan Bespoke which has firm comfort layers and the Artisan Naturals which has medium comfort layers. I would recommend you try the comparable models in the Vi-Spring range, the Herald Superb and the Regal Superb and try them on a platform base if possible as this will change the overall feel.

Regarding your base, I have never heard of the central bar being higher so I couldn't say for definite that this would not be a problem.  If the space between the slats is 3 inches or more we would recommend placing MDF or Plywood over them to give the mattress an even surface. If the space is less then we would recommend a barrier such as an old blanket or duvet to protect the underside of the mattress from indentations from the slats.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
