Recommended mattress for lower back pain?  Tempur or Vi Spring?

Michaela Long Answered 3 months ago

Hi Christine,

Thank you for your question. The advice used to be that anyone who suffered from any type of back problem required a firm or orthopaedic mattress. However, this is not the case. The correct level of support is essential to keep your spine aligned, along with the level of comfort based on your sleep positions. The tension of the springs is dictated by your height and body weight.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Which Vispring model are you considering? Each model, like our Artisan range, has different levels of comfort in the upholstery layers on top of the springs. Your sleep position and how you prefer a mattress to feel will determine which comfort layers are most suitable. For example, we do not recommend firm upholstery layers for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees or you can pivot on these areas which puts pressure on your lower spine, causing pain. Likewise, if the upholstery is too soft for a front or back sleeper, you can sink in too much, which can put pressure on your lower spine.

Which Tempur mattress are you considering? Different densities provide different levels of comfort and support. Whilst a traditional pocket sprung mattress provides a cushioning feel, foam mattresses, like memory foam, provide a more moulding sensation. This type of mattress relieves pressure by contouring to the unique shape of your body, which can help alleviate pressure point pain for some people. However, as memory foam requires body heat to be able to mould to you, in most cases, this heat is unable to dissipate and is fed back to the sleeper, which can make many sleepers overheat.  Natural latex will provide the same moulding feel but is much more breathable and responsive, making it easier to turn over during the night.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
